Safari can no longer address .xxyyzz.lan hosts on the local domain.

My local network is set up as <host>.xxyyzz.lan and xxyyzz.lan is given through DHCP as the local domain. I have a local DNS containing the relevant entries.

The problem is that Safari no longer accepts either <host> or the full <host>.xxyyzz.lan. It just searches for <host> in google instead which is obviously broken.

This used to work in iOS 6 and I'm quite sure it worked in early iOS 7 versions aswell.

Any solutions?

I have an older ipod touch running 3.1.3... and it follows the dhcp handed local domain search path. Trying the same, borrowing a visitor's iPhone 4 on 7.1 - on our network, as you experience.. even a local domain of "x" with a primary intranet server of just "x"... I get the expected: A search on google.

Looks like Apple leaned over to Google in bed, wiped off its ____ and said, "Honey? let's drive all traffic through you, and we can share in the inADvertent ad revenue we glean from breaking the most basic standards, and the entire point, of the domain name system."

Are you surprised? (Sorry I can't offer an idea to fix, other than go to another OS)
