I did a restore from Backup as I lost a contact detail only to discover I have now lost most of contacts..... what does a backup actually backup - all setting are lost..... hours of re-configuring ahead of me.... tks

READ the article from which the statement was posted, it explicitly states what is backed up.
If the iPhone had been used as designed, contacts would be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
