Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

When I start up iMac, Chrome automatically opens. How do I make it stop?

I have Safari, Chrome and Firefox as browsers. They are all in my dock. Safari is my default browser.

After I've shut down the computer, when I start up again, Chrome is the only browser that opens automatically at start up. I don't want any of them to do that. I've looked through preferences and can't find anything. I've looked in my Library:StartUpItems folder, but there seems to be nothing there.

How do I make Chrome stop starting?

I have tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked. That app was bound and determined to dominate my computer and it didn't matter what I did. I tried taking it off my dock. I tried the solution where you right click the icon and deselect the option "Open at Startup". I tried going into System Preferences>Users and Groups>LogIn Items and unchecking Google. The things I tried actually made Chrome more aggressive.

I don't need an application that I cannot control and finally just uninstalled Chrome. It is a shame because occasionally I find that Safari doesn't operate optimally with some sites and I needed Chrome in those rare instances. But it just wasn't worth it to me because I was constantly being distracted with the job of shutting it down when it popped up unbidden. I don't keep apps that are more trouble than they are worth.

That doesn't do it for me. I have repeatedly deleted Chrome from Login Items in Users and Groups preferences, and Chrome keeps adding itself back in with each restart.

I don't know how Google is doing this, but the is really annoying and unacceptable. I am looking forward to hearing from anyone who has found a fix for this. Otherwise, I am uninstalling Chrome.

Chrome does not run on any Mac running the version of OS X covered by this forum.

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

Hi there

Re. Chrome starting up automatically at boot time:

27 inch iMac, mid-2011, using OS X El Capitan 10.11.4

Using Chrome version 49.0.2623.112 (64-bit)

I have inspected and complied with all the suggestions offered by the people writing on this thread including right clicking the Chrome icon, all the solutions in the System Preferences (Users and Groups, etc.).

Nothing is checked to make Chrome start up automatically - but it still does it. I have even made Safari my default browser under "General". No effect, Chrome still starts up.

I have also tried altering Chrome's options on right-clicking the icon. Close down, boot up, change option, close down and reboot again and do it repeatedly with all of the options. Nothing will stop Chrome from opening automatically.

What now?

I didn't realize Chrome was in my Startup menu. It was really annoying it was opening up all the time after a restart. I have El Capitan. After I went to System Preferences>Users & Groups>User>Login Items (Tab) you can minus/delete all the programs you don't need to start up. I leave iTunesHelper and Dropbox open. All the others are not really important unless you have a specific program that needs to start up or be in the background. Chrome does not need to start up for me. I just didn't think it was there...those wily Google people.

When I start up iMac, Chrome automatically opens. How do I make it stop?
