Error message; cannot get mail connection to server failed

I keep get an error message when I try to open my email... Cannot get mail, connection to server failed. I haven't made any changes except upgrading. What should I do to fix this?

Late to the party, but my wife was getting the "Cannot get mail, connection to server failed" error on both iPad and iPhone, but not her Mac. Long story short: she had changed her password on the Mac but not on the mobile devices. No idea why she got the error message instead of "Password Invalid"...that led us down some blind alleys for a bit.

The iPad's Mail app has no provisions for creating groups. However, you can use a third party app that many users recommend.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

 Cheers, Tom 😉

If you changed your password, as I did after learning that Yahoo had been hacked for personal info, you may have to manually change your password on the device. Settings: Mail, Contacts, Calendars: Accounts (touch the account name which is not working): Account: Password. Type in your new password, and your device should begin synchronizing with your mail account. It could take a while if it hasn't been working for a while.

THANK YOU SO MUCH - your post finally gave me the solution I needed.

Several days ago I suddenly couldn't open Mail - was getting the error message HarleyChick67 initially asked about, even when I had internet connection & everything else was connecting with no problem. I spent many hours over several days troubleshooting the problem, doing everything except uninstalling & re-installing (an action I loathe due tobad experiences in the past). After trying so many other things, this change-your-password solution seems so simple; but it never would have occurred to me to do it. Like Isabeau's Heart says, Yahoo's an online-based program - why is access device-dependent?

This has been a very valuable lesson. Thanks again!‼️

I keep having similar problems: I get the sentence cnnot get mail because server connection failed or something like it.

But I CAN get my emails!!

I suggest a simple solution to those persistent and increasing annoyances from Apple: walk way and get an android. That'smwhat I'm doing as soon as I'm out of contract.

Coupled with the creepy way they changed access to genius bar appointments, this pretty much breaks camel back for me. I'm done with Apple.

I have 3 1/2 twins and they love their IPads and etc.! Fine! that will remain unchanged, but papa is walking!!

Bye Bye Apple. Who knows maybe they peruse these posts and will take notice of customer discontent....
