The iPad's Mail app has no provisions for creating groups. However, you can use a third party app that many users recommend.

Configuration problems with IMAP e-mail on iOS with a non-standard SSL port.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
Cheers, Tom

Jan 27, 2014 8:28 AM in response to HarleyChick67by Kevin McFadin,I have a similar situation, but only at a specific location, even when connected to wifi, and with a good cellular connection. As soon as I get to work, no servers can be accessed.

Mar 3, 2014 10:26 AM in response to HarleyChick67by tboneman51,If you changed your password, as I did after learning that Yahoo had been hacked for personal info, you may have to manually change your password on the device. Settings: Mail, Contacts, Calendars: Accounts (touch the account name which is not working): Account: Password. Type in your new password, and your device should begin synchronizing with your mail account. It could take a while if it hasn't been working for a while.

This worked immediately.
Never gave this a thought since it is an online based email program.

Mar 22, 2014 1:06 PM in response to Isabeau's Heartby FALcatkin, tboneman and Isabeau:
Changing your password in the place tboneman specifies may only be half of it.
You should also go to Settings > Mail > your account > Outgoing Mail Server > Primary Server > Password and update the password here if there is one. This password is for outgoing mail, the other for incoming.

Mar 23, 2014 12:51 PM in response to FALcatkinby tboneman51,Thanks, FALcatkin. This must be set automatically for me, because Outgoing Mail Server: Password is "optional" and it's gray, so I can't change it. It must be automatic for my type of account. Frankly, this mail subject is complicated, with the iCloud account and the various controls. I don't understand it, and I don't like that.

Apr 22, 2014 5:40 AM in response to HarleyChick67by Pichon66,Late to the party, but my wife was getting the "Cannot get mail, connection to server failed" error on both iPad and iPhone, but not her Mac. Long story short: she had changed her password on the Mac but not on the mobile devices. No idea why she got the error message instead of "Password Invalid"...that led us down some blind alleys for a bit.

Jul 6, 2014 12:59 AM in response to tboneman51by Dulcinea16,THANK YOU SO MUCH - your post finally gave me the solution I needed.
Several days ago I suddenly couldn't open Mail - was getting the error message HarleyChick67 initially asked about, even when I had internet connection & everything else was connecting with no problem. I spent many hours over several days troubleshooting the problem, doing everything except uninstalling & re-installing (an action I loathe due to bad experiences in the past). After trying so many other things, this change-your-password solution seems so simple; but it never would have occurred to me to do it. Like Isabeau's Heart says, Yahoo's an online-based program - why is access device-dependent?
This has been a very valuable lesson. Thanks again!‼️
