Can I stop Software Update notifications in Mavericks?

I am fed up with Mavericks pestering me with notifications that I have software updates waiting to be installed.

Most of them I just don't want.

All I can do is delay it until "tomorrow" when I'm pestered again.

Is there any way of switching it off selectively or even completely?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), Little knowledge... many opinions.

The best option would be to turn off the automatic software update check. Open System Preferences > App Store, and untick "Automatically check for updates". By doing this, you won't get notified of any update and updates won't be downloaded automatically

I want to receive updates but just for those programs that I use. I don't want to devote the hard disk space to programs that I don't use.

How can I receive automatic updates for some Apps but not for all?

For Time Machine we have a feature that enables us to select files or directories that we do NOT wish to backup. What I want is something like that for updates.

The Apple OS has become more and more feature cluttered over the years. It may be getting near the time to bite the bullet and switch to Linux.
