Quoting the symptoms for reference…

Well I'll give it a try, because I'm so ****** off, I've had several kernel panics and Mavericks is incredibly slow, so slow that when I see the rotating sphere (almost all the time doh) I'd like to smash it in the floor. All kinds of help is highly appreciated. That's my ETRE (kudos to the developers): Oh, and you may ask why I use Chrome instead of Safari... Safari is just teribly slow and Chrome is better.

Has 10.9 always been like this, or has it develped recently?

Chrome is fine, so long as it is up to date (it should auto update anyway).

There is nothing obvious that looks like it could cause the slowness & kernel panics aside from these items that load into the system.

I'd suggest double check they are up to date or remove if they are not needed, then try safe boot.

Also try a boot into 'Safe mode' (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

It will disable all third party extensions & startup items.

Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models, graphics drivers will be in a reduced mode - this is normal in safe mode. Test as much as possible to see if the issues re-appear.

Reboot to go back to normal.

If updating the apps and safe mode doesn't help, I'd backup the entire disk & reboot to recovery & reinstall OS X. It will leave the apps & user data in place if you choose the default options.

Let us know how the updates & safe mode test go.

I've updated Adobe, but the strange thing is that I uninstalled autodesk products a couple of months ago, and quarkexpress a week ago.

Safe mode was a mess, I opened "finder" - my main problem is with it because I'm working with lots of images, I cannot cmd-shift (delete) them properly - it's like it's not in real time with the preview and when I must delete several files at a time it becomes a total mess.

Nov 22, 2013 5:52 AM in response to CarrionFairy

How did you uninstall them? You must use the vendor-provided uninstaller. Any other method is likely to leave debris that can cause problems. You are running BitTorrent via a login item. I can't think of a better way to slow down and destabilize a machine than that. Normally, having kernel panics without any 3rd party kernel extensions is a sign of a hardware failure. However, all bets are off when you have given the worst people on the internet write access to your system.

Nov 22, 2013 11:09 AM in response to CarrionFairy

Removing/ disabling bittorrent may help if your Mac is getting tied up reading & writing lots of data for sharing via the web.

Those launchd jobs run in the background. If you had deleted any major parts of the software I'd expect at least some of the jobs to fail, they all seem to be loaded happily.

It suggests there may be a lot left behind. The jobs can be deleted, but whats the point if all the software is still taking space & simply waiting for you to relaunch it so it can re-create the job.

Some companies have removal tools or instructions.

How to Uninstall QuarkXPress?

Autodesk - Autodesk Smoke Services & Support- The last paragraph mentions a 'graphical uninstaller'

Searching autodesk should help…

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/u/gsearch/results?siteID=123112&catID=12315 5&id=2088334&qt=uninstall+mac&srchSource=gss

I don't know what this is…

com.jrdcom.com.IM.Connection-Manager.plist

Assuming Adobe's apps are all up to date those jobs might be OK, but makes sure you check the Adobe support to see if they are 10.9 compatible or have any known bugs.

Safe mode will disable those launchd jobs, which didn't seem to help. So I'd backup & reinstall the OS. If you are lucky it will improve. It just feels like a lame suggestion, but it can help it seems.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.

Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.

Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I've got the email aaand it says that they've ran hardware tests (Apple service diagnostics, video system test and some practical tests), and software tests (working from outside OS and OS prophylactics). In conclusion my computer has had software problems. That's it. Well we'll see from now how it'll behave. Now it's working almost as it was with snow leopard and i'm thinking about installing more ram. I hope that I won't see them soon.

Problems with Mavericks - incredibly slow/ Kernel panics
