Had an Apple support call to try and diagnose why my iPhone randmly soft restarts every so often to the black screen with the white logo.

I notice it happens randomly, two recent incidents were when I was activating the camrea from the home screen and when I double clicked for multi-tasking.

The support lady looked at my diagnostics and said it looked like an Out of Memory error was occurring, and that an application called backboardd was the issue.

I have not yet determined if backboardd is an official part of iOS, or is a remnent of a version of my iPhone back up from the cloud, which contained a component of a jailbreak I performed on an old iPhone some while ago.

The iPhone I have now is running 7.0.4.

Any idea if backboardd is legit, if I can remove it, and if so where from (is it from the link?) http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o528/divaschematic/backboard_zps975e18f2.jpg

Wipe your phone and start it off as new.   You've prob got quite a bit of "junk" in your backup file and a good cleanup isn't the worst idea in the world.

  • fk23 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Will it not just restore from the most recent saved profile from the backup though and install the same junk files as per the first install?

  • pdroth Level 5 Level 5 (5,080 points)

Don't restore - start fresh.   A restore will bring back everything - you can't cherrypick which items you want and don't want.

It's a pain, but it's the best way to eliminate the problem.

I've got years of photos on that backup, settings I can sort and lots of apps, how am I supposed to get them back (without manually downloading every app from the App Store)

  • fk23 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Can anyone confirm if Backboardd is part of the native iOS build or if it is actually part of something else?

Until this is resolved I'm stuck.

    You can't get help here.

To be clear, two years ago I jailbroke a phone after it was out of warrenty.

I am trying to establish a part of that has stuck itself in my iCloud backup and has made its way back to my iPhone5s, (current iOS I haven't jailbroken it, I cannot nor do I want to).

I am trying to find out if Backboardd is part of the native iOS.  if it is, it's down to Apple to sort me out. If not then it's not. But until someone can confirm if it's a part of iOS I can't do very much.

I'm not asking for jailbreak information.

http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/Backboardd this for example says it's part of iOS, but when I spoke to Apple they said it wasn't theirs.

Unless you're talking about the basketball app by that name that's available in the app store, no. Backboard is a jailbreak app. A theme installer.

Put your phone in DFU mode and restore it as new. Do NOT restore your backup. Manually re-sync your data and re-install your apps from the app store.

  • fk23 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Ah.

Well that's the weekend gone to the iphone then.

  • KiltedTim Level 8 Level 8 (45,820 points)

Regardless, the answer remains the same.

Will syncing my data restore text messages and the entire photo collection (or just Photostream)? It's been a while since I last did this.

  • KiltedTim Level 8 Level 8 (45,820 points)

No. You would need to restore your backup to restore the camera roll. Restoring your backup could potentially re-introduce the problem.

Extract any photos from the camera roll before you wipe it. You can sync the photos back to the phone via iTunes after the fact. The contents of photo-stream should download automatically (keep in mind that Photo Stream in the cloud only holds the last 30 days worth of photos).

Righto. I think it's all backed up in iPhoto anyway so I'll just have to dump it back  in through that  once it's up and running again.  Thanks.

I completely wiped the phone, installed everything manually and it's been a week but it restarted again.

Report below STILL shows backboards on it. I have no idea how it can be there if I installed manually as new. Graham
