icloud is using my old email address which no longer exists and I can't change it nor delete the i cloud account

OK, something is not jiving here. You indicated that you wanted to get signed out of iCloud. But now you are indicating:

Does this device show up in the Find My iPhone app in iCloud.com on your computer?

I'm sorry, but are you asking how to sign your old Apple ID out of iCloud? If so, did you try following the steps provided on the first page of this thread?

I am having this same issue. Whenever I followed the steps that you have provided, I am getting an error message stating "Verification Failed. There was an error connecting to iCloud."

At what step are you verifying the email address?

As far as verifying the email, you were not supposed to, so it's good you didn't try.

What is preventing you from signing the iCloud account out of your iPhone 6?

I can't sign out because it doesn't accept the password.

I'm using my current password, the same one I used to sign out of the iCloud on my iPhone4S earlier today.

Apple changed the way that this fix works, so you should be able to simply put in your current password to sing out the old iCloud account.
