Safari Plugin Error Message

I have been experiencing a plug in error message every time I open Safari. I have reset Safari, and tried deleting the plugin, but it keeps coming back. The message is as follows:

SIMBL Error

Safari 2.0.4 (v419.3) has not been tested with the plugin (null) (null) (v0.61). As a precaution, it has not been loaded. Please contact the plugin developer for further information.

What is this and why can't I get rid of it?

SIMBL is used by third party plugins like Pith Helmet and AcidSearch, it will be installed in either <username>/Library/InputManagers or <harddrive>/Library/InputManagers, or both. If you're using any of the plugins they will recreate it every time and you must make sure both instances are cleared to be sure.

Every time Apple updates OS X it breaks SIMBL in this way and is deeply annoying.

SIMBL is an interface to make it easier for 3rd party developers to make plugins for Safari. What SIMBL does when Safari is updated is that it detects that the plugins are for an older version of Safari and refuses to load them so that you can continue using Safari. Before SIMBL, older plugins often caused Safari to crash or have performance problems, so SIMBL's behavior is actually a safety valve to let you continue using Safari.

You need to know what plugins you have installed that use SIMBL (PithHelmet, Saft, AcidSearch, etc.) and then you need to watch VersionTracker or Macupdate to see when an update of that plugin is released and then to install the update. SIMBL will then load that plugin.

SIMBL is not broken, it is protecting Safari from older plugins that could cause problems for Safari. Safari will continue to run with the plugins not loaded, just click through the message box. However, you will not have the use of the plugins until you update them.

I am not aware of a list of plugins using SIMBL. I know that PithHelmet and Saft do and I believe AcidSearch does. SIMBL was written byt the person who wrote PithHelmet, so the SIMBL warning box names PithHelmet when appropriate, so if the warning box does not name PithHelmet, you can rule that plugin out.

You can look in Library/InputManagers to see what is installed there.
