My ipod nano (7th gen) won't sync all of the songs in my itunes library... The usage bar at the bottom says that all of the songs are on there but 'on this ipod' says a number varying between 850ish and 960ish each time I try to sync! What is going on?

I've tried looking up the file type/size of the lates 6 or 7 cds that I burned onto itunes but that was useless as I don't know what theyre meant to be in order to transfer to my ipod! Please help, this is SO frustrating as I've always been able to sync my whole library in the past and now Ive actually lost songs from my ipod!!! Grrr

I thought it could be the "enable for disk use" in the iPod, but I tried un-check that, it still sync only 1115 songs.

If you had Enable disk use checked, and you manually copied files to the iPod's disk (outside of iTunes), those files will still be on the iPod, even if you uncheck Enable disk use. They need to be removed manually.

If you have not already, you can try doing a Restore on the iPod in iTunes. The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary screen. This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings. Any files manually stored on the iPod will also be erased, so if there happens to be "14+GB" of non-iTunes files stored on the iPod's disk, that problem will be resolved. This document has details for doing a Restore.

Restoring iPod to factory settings

NOTE: Do yo use Apple's iTunes Match service, which allows you to store some (or all) of your iTunes Music library in iCloud (instead of your local drive)? If you do, only songs files stored locally on your computer's drive will sync to the iPod.

The "bar" at the bottom does not say anything about all of your songs being on the iPod. It just shows you how much of its storage capacity is being used, based on what is on the iPod.

If you see "On This iPod," that means the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible. This is easier to describe with the sidebar visible, so from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.

Select the iPod in the sidebar, under DEVICES. There is a bar of buttons near the top, starting with Summary. Click on Music next to Summary. This is the iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.

Check the box for Sync Music. You can choose to sync Entire music library, if (?) your iTunes music library fits on the iPod. With this setting, your entire iTunes music library syncs to the iPod, and new songs get synced automatically. A 7th gen iPod nano is 16GB, so your iTunes music library would have to be less than 16GB (not counting non-music content on the iPod). Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres. Then, select (checkmark) the playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres you want on the iPod from the lists below. If you want newly added songs to sync to the iPod, they must be part of your selection. For example, you can add them to a playlist that you have selected for syncing to the iPod.

When you click Apply, the songs from your selection sync to the iPod. Going forward, changes to your iTunes library (based on your settings on the iPod's Music screen) sync automatically to the iPod, the next time it is connected (or when you click Sync).

Hi,

Thanks for your reply... I think I've already tried that but I'll do it again, following your instructions as I may have done it a little differently (can't be sure as I tried so many things and synced my ipod so many times!)...

I definately tried to manually select songs but alot of them went grey and didn't sync - this is where I lost even more songs... Going from 950ish down to 856!!!

I didn't try making a playlist specifically of the newer burnt songs from my own cds tho...

Am still curious as to why it won't just sync these automatically. Frustrating!

FYI.. If you hover your mouse over the "bar" at the bottom, it will show the number of songs on the ipod (so it says, I've no idea where they are!) and (I think) the time it will take to play them...

Thanks again and I'll let you know if I have any success with your tips 🙂

Regards

NOTE: You can have everything sync automatically. But only IF your entire iTunes music library fits on the iPod. If your iTunes music library is too large to fit completelly on the iPod, THEN you need to set up syncing (on the iPod's Music screen) so that what you select for syncing (the playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres) fits on the shuffle. That "bar" at the bottom is there to help you keep your selection below the capacity limit of the iPod.

On some older iPods that use a hard drive for storage, the capacity may have been much larger. So you may have been able to set it to sync Entire music library. Then, everything in your iTunes library syncs automatically.

Watanabe san,

What you have described has always been the method that I use to sync my old iPod, but once I got the gen 7, 16GB.

I cannot seemed to sync beyond 8GB (or 1115 songs)

I was trying to sync 3840 songs (about 10.5 GB on the windows explorer)

I thought it could be the "enable for disk use" in the iPod, but I tried un-check that, it still sync only 1115 songs.

I even tried wiping out all songs and photos in the iPod, but not syncing anything, reboot the iPod and connecting to iTunes to confirm there is nothing inside. But when I try to sync my selected playlist again, only half of the playlist and 1115 songs were synced.

I cannot find other solution and wonder why no other people encounter this problem with the new gen 7 iPod.

Is it a factory defect or the iPod actually has only 8GB inside but iTune shows 14+GB?

Thanks

My problem was I could only see a very limited selection of my entire music library when I attempted to sync music with my ipod nano. Your footnote resolved my issue. I have iTunes Match, so only 113 songs were available on my local drive, while the remaining tens of thousands of songs were in the Cloud. All I had to do was click on the download icon next to each song (or album) and all of my music was available. Thanks!!!!

Kenichi - thank you so much for your advice - I have spent all day trying to resolve my syncing problems - all I had to do was to download the vast majority of my iCloud library from my iTunes songs list, and then everything synced perfectly. I only had around 50 tunes stored locally on my laptop the other 700 were in the iCloud. Downloading the 700 tunes took a while but the end result is well worth it. I now have a splitting headache but again, no pain, no gain :-)

Many thanks and best wishes,

Michael
