I'm not aware of an "11.1" model of iMac. If you have a 27" Late 2009 or Mid-2010 iMac, which according to MacTracker would be the 10.1 and 11.3 models, respectively, then yes, you can use Target Display Mode:

There is no converter available for any Thunderbolt-equipped Mac. The converters work only with the pre-Thunderbolt 27" Macs that have mini-DisplayPorts only.

No, I am referring to the model of iMac. It doesn't matter what version of Mac OS X it is running. And no, there is no way to get an a 2008 iMac to support Target Display Mode. That's a hardware limitation, not software. Only the Late 2009 and later iMacs have that feature.

As I said previously, lag time on video input devices usually makes game play unworkable. And one can buy a perfectly decent monitor for the price of one of those Blackmagic units.

Well, I'm not looking for gaming but simply to watch TV in our kitchen using the satellite receiver as source. We have an iMac on the desk and there is no room for a separate TV so I'm trying to get the iMac to do double duty. I'm wondering if the Blackmagic would work for that? Of course, means a new iMac too, so not a cheap solution!!

I think the lag would make the video and audio drop out of sync for TV shows as well, so I don't think that a solution. If you can get a Blackmagic box with return privileges, though, you can try it and see. You'll need to feed it though video capture software such as iMovie which will make the screen display perhaps less than ideal.
