If you'd like to remove files with a "!" I find it easier to get Dupin Lite 2 from the App Store.

In Dupin Lite 2...

1) Click "Get Dupes"

2) Once complete Dupin will identify "dead" tracks in red font

3) To remove click Tools>Remove "Dead" Tracks...

Dupin will then remove files with "!" from iTunes

Note: because the tracks are considered "dead" no files on the file system are impacted

The script you've been given should do the job of identifying the broken links in the library. This is an alternative approach:

Lost & Found playlists

Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist.

Use Get Info on one of the broken tracks and look at the location given on the summary tab where iTunes is looking for the file. Where is the file really? In some cases it may be possible to either move the media to where iTunes is looking for it or, if the two paths differ by one having an extra /Music/ folder, tweaking a settings file. If you post both paths I may be able to offer suggestions.

I have a script for the task in Windows, but not for OS X. If you create the playlists above so that iTunes "knows" which files are missing, then double-click one to attempt to play it iTunes should ask you to locate the file. After doing so it may offer to try to fix other broken links. If you don't get that offer try again with the CMD-I Get Info route.

As I said before if you can let me know where iTunes thinks a typical missing file ought to be and where it really is I may be able to make some useful suggestions.

Hi,

After scrolling down my library 3x I've tried what you said to do with the playlists to locate all "!"-marked tracks in itunes, but they don't show up.. I've tried several apps such as TrackSift and PowerTunes to locate them but they can't find them.. I have even tried to give all tracks a certain bpm-value to isolate them but still nothing.. But when I check, itunes still says there are 7 more files missing and those tracks are marked by an "!" Do I have ghost-marks or something? How do I get rid of "!"-marks which aren't there?

Thanx..
