Omgsh! Thank you thank you thank you! I was very skeptical about this after reading. I even tried about 4 times...my screen would just barely light up. I ALMOST gave up. At first I tapped lightly, then a "medium" tap, then I finally got frustrated and gave it some pretty severe slams with my fist (while lying it face down on the bed). That did it! I am so thankful and so shocked that this actually worked! If it doesn't work at first, keep trying! Thanks to all of you for sharing this and providing this magic fix!!!

Thanks so much! This helped me too. My screen was totally black after a fall from my bedside table - not even 2 feet. My iPad is in a leather case which leaves the corners exposed. I had already tried the tapping bit, I read that elsewhere, but nothing. So I watched a YouTube clip and opened the thing, damaging my WiFi aerial in the process (inspite of them warning us to be really careful in that area). Couldn't see anything disconnected and decided to Google some more. That's when I found your post. Held down the Home and Power buttons and in about 15 seconds the Apple logo appeared! I couldn't believe my eyes. I wish I'd seen this post before I opened the device. Anyway, it's working now. It did take a while to boot after the logo appeared, so don't be discouraged if it doesn't come to life immediately. For the record, my device also made the gong sound when the charger was plugged in and I was able to back it up using iTunes on my PC. I did the reset without having to connect the charger as I could see the charge status in iTunes when I backed it up - was already fully charged.
