i'm a noob/beginner to FCP 7. need help compressing big file to small

Hello people.

I just started doing editing on FCP 7 to practice. I have a file that I editted which came out to be 3.5 gb worth. How do i export and compress into small file so that i can upload to vimeo or youtube...and what file do i need to have in anyway? Thanks.

Your problem is that you are editing in H.264 which is not an edit friendly codec for FCP-7. It appears to work, but it does not - as you can see by the problems you are having.

FCP requires that you convert your source material to an edit friendly codec such as ProRes and edit on a ProRes timeline.

If you wish to edit natively, without format conversion prior to ingesting, you can use FCP-X (which has a 30 day free trial) or Adobe Premiere. Either of those apps support editing directly in the H.264 codec.
