iPhoto '09 "Add New Place" broken

I was never able to successfully update my iPhoto library (150,000 pictures and 350GB) to iPhoto '11. After a day or so of upgrading iPhoto would just quit. It now appears that now that Apple has upgraded iPhoto (version 9.5) to use Apple maps for places the "Add New Place" in iPhoto '09 is now broken. I can still view my currently geotagged pictures in the Places. I can add a location to a photo if I select from a previously assigned place. However, typing in a name and choosing to search for it with the "Add New Place" window just leaves a spinning gear for as long as 24 hours (before I cancelled). I'm up-to-date with Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks and iPhoto is as up-to-date as it can be to version 8.1.2. But I always use Places to geotag my pictures. It is happening on my MacBook Pro even with new users and a new iPhoto library. I was hoping it would resolve itself but after a week now I guess it's not just a Google problem. Anyone else able to add new places?

Well, everything seems to be working except adding places. And adding places worked until last Thursday or Friday. All my keywords are working and I've ordered a hardcover book. And I can see all my previously assigned places on the map. I can add previously used places, I just can't add new places.

I installed 10.9 on an external drive, copied my iPhoto library over and purchased iPhoto '11 9.5. Amazinging enough, I was able to upgrade the library with the new version of iPhoto. Unfortunately, the performance is so poor as to be unusable. Attempting to add a place to any photo just results in a spinning beach ball. Selecting a photo inside an event in order to create an album or add the picture to an album take 30-60 seconds. It's just so unresponsive as to be useless.

Throughout the life of Places in iPhoto there have been troubles every once in a while on Google's side of the feature. They had to resolve an issue of their own that did not involve iPhoto or Apple. Sometimes you had to delete all your Google cookies (in Safari) to get the Places to start working again. This time Google resolved whatever problem they were having and Places in iPhoto just started working again.
