How to stop auto-archive in Mail

If you don't want or need to keep the emails in Archive, yes, you can delete them. But don't delete them if you'd like to be able to refer to them later.

As for settings to check, it depends on what you're trying to do.

It seems the Archive mailbox for Gmail has disappeared! The strange thing is that my main email account is with Virginmedia.com, and as far as I've understood it, they use Google's servers. When I changed the settings for this account but put Virginmedia as IMAP Path Prefix, the Sent folder disappeared! So I removed that, and it seems that the Archive for Virginmedia.com has also disappeared. How did this come about, I wonder!

Thanks for your advice - very helpful!! I had both a Gmail and Yahoo accounts set up. I made the changes in Gmail and it worked... but am still having similar problems with Yahoo (i.e. everything is automatically going to the Archive folder in Mac Mail). Do you know where the setting are in Yahoo to do the same thing?

Melinda thank you for your help and knowledge. I have several gmail accounts that I access in Mac Mail. I often move the emails from one one inbox to another and then from an inbox to iCloud folders once I am done with them. Whenever I move mail to/from any folders I often find that the mail goes to an archive folder. Often mail that has been in a particular box will just move itself to archive. Any ideas? Any other info I need to provide?

I figured it out! Go to your Gmail account> Settings> Labels and about the 7th selection down, turn off "Show in IMAP" all the way to the right of "All Mail". I only read the first page of discussions. So I apologize if this was already figured out. If not, then I hope this helps! It worked for me.

It worked for one of my gmails, but I went to my other one to fix it right after I wrote my last post, and it doesn't even have the option to "show in IMAP", because my IMAP is off on that account..yet it still shows up for this particular account! How confusing! At least it worked for one of my accounts. Hopefully it'll help somebody.

Amazing... Are you a consultant or do you have a contact I can use to consult you on, in the future? Mail was archiving every sent and draft gmail message; I use google mail for my business. The extraneous archive volume was driving me around in circles. Bless you and thank you.

No, you didn't create it. Mail uses it if there is an "archive" folder on your email server. For Gmail, Mail maps it to the All Mail label. So, it was your email server which created the mailbox.

There does not appear to be an auto archive in Mail the messages must be selected manually then archived. Perhaps you have a rule set that is archiving the messages?

I missed that! I can't say what the 10.9.1 update includes I dont have it.

Are you using beta software (10.9.1) or not.
