P RAM shortcut didn't work. Any other suggestions?
Trying to reset the PRAM on an iMac and the shortcut at startup hasn't worked.
Anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it?

What do you mean by "didn't work"? Did the PRAM not reset? Or did it reset but the problem you were attempting to address was not solved? If the latter, what problem are you having that you believe a PRAM reset would cure?
When working on the computer it slowed down. When attempting to turn it off it went to a white screen and then when turning back on wouldn't pass the white screen.
Apple support suggested restarting and attempting to reset the PRAM but the using the shortcut doesn't do anything, it still won't pass the white screen regardless of how long it's held down for.
So Apple support was wrong and PRAM was not the cause of your problem.
Try a safe boot by holding down the shift key during boot.
Do you get the startup chime when your power up the Mac?

Have a look at the suggestions in this Knowledge Base article, which includes the PRAM reset (make sure you are using the correct key combination: Command+Option (Alt)+p+r and release the keys at the second chime.
