Support Files in Xcode 5

Hello everyone! I'm somewhat new to developing, and I am making iOS apps. When I made my first app, I had it coded and pictures in. When I tried to swiitch in a new picture for the home screen, I got an error.

Do I need to add the support files into Xcode before I do anything? Or can I code everything and then add the pictures?

Can someone explain this to me please?

Thanks!

*After I deleted the reference to a file*

I tried to replace the .png with another .png of the same name and Xcode told me I couldn't replace the file even though I deleted the first file reference.

By "pictures in" I meant they were referenced and in the story board

By "support files" I meant the pictures I am using for the background etc.

I don't get why it gave me that error as I deleted it
