We could not complete your App Store request - 10.8.4 Mountain Lion

Simply cannot access the App Store anymore. Always getting this error when trying to access "Purchase" or "Updates" (logged in or not):

The App Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

About a year ago I installed a new SSD into the laptop, so I've been able to insert the old hard drive and verify on the old install that I can access the app store no problem.

I can access the iTunes store fine also. No problems there.

Where do I go from here?

I am getting the same error on on my 2009 Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.5. I just need to update iTunes, but it won't let me. Not sure how long this has been going on since I only use this Mac Mini as a media hub to stream to various devices in my house.

My 2010 McBook Pro and 2012 McBook Air have no issues with updates via the Mac App Store.

BTW, I have tried the spotlight "fix" to no avail. I prefer to keep all unneccessary service turned off to preserve processor power and memory to my core purpose of the Mini... streaming. And I do not want to upgrade to a newer OS since this has been very stable for me up to this point.

Like many other commenters I was skeptical of jlaurel71's solution-- it sounded like the quirkiness of a one-off screwed up system (sorry jlaurel71!). Had it not been for the confirmation of a few others in this discussion, I would not even have tried it (there's a lesson right there).

I'm posting this for other skeptical folks: I had the same problem on 10.8.4 and it was making me crazy because I couldn't update to Yosemite.

The solution works folks. In my case I hadn't even turned of spotlight... something must have gotten corrupted. In the end I had to use the terminal line to unload (which failed) then load (which succeeded) then unload (which succeeded) and then finally load again, as described in http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disable-or-enable-spotlight-in-mac-os-x-lion/

Here is my totally speculative speculation about the why of this: in order to compare what the local system has vs what is available on the Apple store, the AppStore app makes use of spotlight. If the latter is screwed up, then things get screwed up. Sadly, the error message generated is a total red herring.
