how do I move a row in a table.

The instructions from teh Pages manual (below) doesn't work. i.e. I can't get the rows to "appear to lift off the table" to move them.

Move rows and columns within a table

Select one or more rows or columns, then do either of the following:

  • Move rows: Click and hold the blue bar for the rows so they appear to lift off the table, then drag above or below another row.

Thanks

I had the same problem and it was driving me nuts, too. I was simply trying to swap two adjacent columns. Every time I clicked on the column label, the whole table would highlight/select. It was driving me nuts.

For me, I found it was sharing a merged cell with the others. In my troubleshooting, I added a new column and it moved fine. Knowing the moving function (and my mouse) worked, I looked to see what was different. The new one had no merged cells.

Even though you're moving to a location sharing the same merged cell(s), it must be detached unless everything merged is moving with it.

My solution:

  1. Make sure there are no merged cells within the row/column you are moving to or from. They can be moved together if they are merged. (Thus, the auto-selection.)
  2. Then do as mentioned by clicking and holding the row/column label.
  3. Don't forget to re-merge any cells.

This cant be done if the table goes across two pages but as a workaround (whilst apple sorts out this oversight) you can go to the formatting sidebar, click the arrange tab and click 'Stay on page' at the top. This will temporaitly mean your table is all on one page (with poor visibility) while you move your rows. Then click back to 'move with text'.

hope this helps
