Deleting emails on Mail App won't delete them from the server.

Let's say a message arrives in my outlook.com (hotmail) inbox. I can then see this message via live.com (web interface), my iPhone (on iOS7) and Mac Mail (on Mavericks)

• If I delete the message on the web site, it will then also be removed from Mac Mail and my iPhone's inboxes
• If instead I delete the message on my iPhone, then the message will also be removed from Mac Mail and the web site
• If however, I delete the message from Mac Mail, then it remains in the inbox on the website and on my iPhone

Note that I also have Outlook for Mac (that I don't use) but have tested the behaviour here too. I've manually configured an IMAP account and it works just fine (i.e. I delete a message from Outlook and it is removed from the website, my iPhone and Mac Mail)

Therefore it's only Mac Mail that's not playing ball - so I suspect that Microsoft's IMAP implementation is now correct and rather it's Apple's Mac Mail that may not be right.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Also, if I file a message in Mac Mail, the same behaviour persists - normally (with my previous IMAP email provider when I filed a message it would move it to the folder on my mac, and then remove it from the inbox)

I wanted to see how you have set your mailboxes, but without knowing that I am out. I would rather not guess.

All have the same configuration:

Incoming Mail Server: imap-mail.outlook.com (Port 993 - Use SSL selected, Authentication: Password)

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com (Use default ports, Use SSL selected, Authentication: Password)

MAC MAIL:

Drafts - store on server checked

Sent - Store on server checked (Delete sent messages: never)

Junk - Store on server checked (Delete messages: never)

Trash - Move deleted messages to the trash folder checked, store deleted messages on server unchecked (though I've tried with this checked too), delete messages when one month old

If you want the trash to be the same on all devices it must be stored on the server, right now it operates independently of the other devices.

Hi. As I said I get the same behaviour regardless of how that checkbox is set. Nothing I do on my mac mail will ever successfully delete the message from hotmail

Maybe worth noting that I've been using another IMAP provider for the last four years and this has worked absolutely fine across all my devices so there's something weird with hotmail and mac mail.

Really need to get this working so any advice would be appreciated.

As Microsoft have admitted to problems (Sent and Trash sync) with the Imap implementation used for Hotmail (and LIve/Outlook mail as well) I don't know what to tell you, except ..

Use a better, more developed Imap system or wait until MS fix it.

I would go for option 1 personally.

I'm having the same problem of messages not deleting.

I updated my settings as someone outlined earlier in this thread before I even read that suggestion. I also logged into my Gmail account and checked the settings to be sure they were in line with something I read about 'expunging immediately' - they were already set that way.

Is Gmail a Microsoft product? Yahoo!? I'm having this problem with all of my email including email for my personal web address that my brother-in-law hosts. (I'm waiting to hear what service(?) he uses for that - I don't know how these things work.)

I may have found the solution - for the moment. As of right now, it seems that if I delete the mail while the actual specific mailbox is chosen, the message deletes. It hadn't been working if 'Inbox' was the mailbox chosen. After hours today - & countless times over the years - I just want these emails GONE!

Hi! I used Hotmail which is now Outlook. I have 2 work emails that use exchange and they work just fine. My hotmail emails that I delete through Mac's mail do not show on my phone as deleted, just as read. Same goes for moving them into folders. However the reverse works....I can delete on my iphone, and it will update it in Mac's mail. Oh and it is set up as an IMAP accnt

What server address are you using in Mail for Hotmail incoming email.
