Express on its own?

My dad bought me an Airport Express so that I can connect my hifi in one room with my PC (and iTunes) in another. I have a wireless internet connection via a non-Apple router. I thought I could use the airport express to pick up wireless signal from the router and transmit to the speakers, but it's not working. Do I also need an AirPort Extreme base in order to join an existing network with my airport express?

The Express will join most wireless networks if the settings match up for:

Wireless network name

Wireless network password

Wireless network security

Most users get the network and password correct, but have problems with the security setting.

Do you know the exact type of wireless security that the existing wireless router is using?

Which version of AirPort Utility are you trying to use with the Express?

Thanks for the reply Bob,

The modem/router uses WPA2-Personal

It's Airport Utility Disc Version 1.6

The AE is, I think, an older model. Rather than a stand-alone box, the plug is directly attached to one corner of the AE body so that the whole thing connects to the power supply. I think I read somewhere that maybe this model doesn't allow joining to an established network without an AirPort Extreme but hopefully this isn't right.

Thanks again!

OK, thanks for clarifying that.

Ah, that's on an iPad or iPhone. Your tag line indicated that you were using Vista, so we were thinking along those lines.

Your original post indicated that your dad bought the Express for you.....so we were guility of assuming that it might be a new model.

Can you look on the side of the Express and locate the model number? It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers. Something like A1264, for example.

If you open AirPort Utility on the Vista computer, then click on the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility, what version number do you see?

It will be something like AirPort Utility 5.x.

What happened when you tried to configure the Express before? What error message(s) did you see?
