AVCHD video import direct to iPad/iMovie app?

Can I import AVCHD video (camera: Sony HDR-CX 130) from card reader or USB adapter directly onto iPad/iMovie? Getting ready to travel and would like to import the clips to my iPad and upload while traveling, but don't want to haul laptop along. Is this possible?

It's a shame, but there's no way of directly importing avchd files directly to the ipad. They have to be imported onto a MacBook, iMac or Mac mini and then converted. If your camera supports recording in mp4 or mov format then it can be transferred, but only in 30p which doesn't really give you that nice film look. My canon 5d records in mov format only and it easily transfers directly onto the ipad, but my sony nex will only transfer directly if I choose the mp4 format for recoding in the image size menu. If only sony allowed for recording in 60p and 24p in mp4 formats..... Sigh.... And on we wait....
