Why when I have bought a new iphone outright does Apple and the Carrier have the right to lock my phone and then have the nerve to charge to unlock ?

It came as a suprise that my phone was locked when I tried to change supplier. I am now informed that the phone is automatically locked by Apple when instructed by a supplier. what right do they have to do this when I have puchased the equipemnt out right. It is restrictive practice and should be outlawed

Where did you buy the phone? If you bought it from a carrier, it's likely locked to that carrier. Apple has nothing to do with it one way or the other. In may countries, the carriers are allowed to set whatever conditions they want for unlocking phones, including fees. In some countries, unlocking is not available at all.

If you don't like the practice, take it up with your government.

I bought the phone from an independant shop and then , had a sim only contract with the /carrier. Apple are part of this as they allowed a third party to lock my phone. without my permission.

Thanks I will take it up with the consumer groups in the UK as this is a restritive trade practice and could already be outside the law.

You either purchased from CarPhone Ware house or possibly Phones 4 U

CPW have been catching unwary for several years .The ONLY source of unlocked iPhones in UK is Apple and it is pretty much the same the world over

complete rubbish Apple have nothing to do with locking iPhones .It is a carrier choice to protect their revenue stream

Go complain to the vendor if you have time to waste and the carriers are doing nothing outside the law

I bought a factory sealed phone untouched by CPW, so there was no way they could have locked the phone unless it was locked by Apple when they supplied the phone to CPW. I paid the full price. why protect Apple when they are a key player. I admit CPW did inot inform me the Apple had supplied them with a phone that would lock to the first carrier that was connexted to it.

Apple do not advertise this and are conning the general public. I did my research but how many people consider the locking of a phone unlessit is baought as part of a package , which mine was not.?

If you read all the material you get when you purchase an iphone from CPW it will tell you that your iPhone will lock to the first carrier you use it with. This has nothing to do with Apple. It is CPW that does not advertise this or tell you this. Your argument is with them so complain about their practices to the authorities.

The iPhones sold by CPW lock to the first UK Carrier sim inserted either contract ,PAYG or sim only

Most people who want an unlocked iPhone now know that .It is why they always have stock when Apple have sold out .They also charge the same price for an iPhone that locks when if you had gone to Apple you would have paid the same price for a genuinely unlocked iPhone ....buyer beware

Only CPW pull this stunt

We all learn by our mistakes and Car Phone Warehouse will not be on my list of preferred suppiers when I next buy a phone.

Considering moving away from Apple next time to an Android platform. I have lost a weeks coms for my business over this and not a happy customer.

Thanks for I info, I will take up with them and also let as many people know their practices as possible. But Apple cannot hide behind the reseller. they control the platform and could easily change the practice if they wanted to.
