Using an iPad Mini with an HDMI connected projector

I use an iPad Mini with a projector during the seminars I present and have run into a stumbling block with regard to audio output. I am using the Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter with my LCD projector (flawlessly) and the audio from my iPad goes to the projector through the HDMI cable as well. My problem is I would like to use external speakers instead of the one built into the projector. I have tried the headphone jack of the iPad, no luck. I have tried bluetooth connected speakers for the iPad, again it won't work. Has anyone discovered a way to separate the video and audio from an HDMI output to be able to use external speakers? My guess is that the HDMI "assumes" you are using a television (with built in speakers) and not a projector (which has no provision for audio out).

Thanks Tom,

That will likely work but unfortunately the darn thing cost nearly as much as the projector did! 🙂 I will keep it in mind if I can't find another solution.

Does your projector not have an audio output? Some have an Audio out to connect to speakers. Since the audio is traveling through the HDMI cable the headphone jack on the iPad gets disabled for that. But the projector itself may have an audio output.

Unfortunately, no the projector does not have audio out. That would be too easy 🙂. I way just bypass the speaker in the projector (which I never use) and wire an 1/8" audio jack out of the speak connection inside the projector.

I was able to track down a device that does exactly what I was look to do. This HDMI adaptor has a breakout for both digital and analog audio and costs only $39 shipped

Update!

DOH! I just reset my iPad and guess what happened? Audio is now playing out of the headphone jack with the HDMI connected! This immediately after I placed the order for the adapter I found 😠
