MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch Late 2013, 10.9, unsystematic freeze/hang/unresponsiveness

My brand new MBP retina 15'' Late 2013 keeps freezing on me. Just clicked on a twitter link in an email and then it stopped again; no mouse movement; the seconds of the clock in the menu bar are not moving anymore; no force quit of apps possible; just the power switch helps to turn the machine off.

I don't have any peripherals attached besides apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I already repaired disk permissions from cmd+R while booting, did SMC, PRAM reset and safe boot.

As I read there was an update for the 13'' firmware and one for the 15'' with NVIDIA (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1705) but no new software for my machine yet.

Also looked into /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports but nothing too interesting.

I created sys diagnose and spin dump from activity monitor if that's handy, but Apple Support didn't want them.

They just suggest to reinstall the OS, but as there were already updates for ALL other new Retina MBPs, I'd suppose there needs one for this one too!

Today my 13 inch (which has no nvidia gpu) froze again. I was not using any browser. So the issue has nothing to do with browsers or with the nvidia gpu.

The applications running where:

  • Mail
  • Some Finder windows
  • Calendar
  • Excel
  • Libreoffice
  • Wunderlist

Wunderlist was the application in the foreground when everything stopped responding. It has been like that some other times that the computer freezes completely while using and writing in Wunderlist.

The logs show this message more or less the time of the computer freeze:

19/05/14 09:54:56.000 kernel[0]: pci pause: SDXC

among many other logs, some messages are repeated, like this one:

19/05/14 09:54:46.225 com.apple.audio.DriverHelper[319]: The plug-in named AirPlay.driver requires extending the sandbox for the IOKit user-client class AMDRadeonX4000_AMDAccelDevice.

and this one:

19/05/14 09:54:49.978 Finder[331]: Failed to mmap file. The file has zero length.

Also, almos always after this kind of trouble, I find this kind of messages in the log:

19/05/14 09:54:32.000 kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key LsNM (kSMCKeyNotFound)

19/05/14 09:54:32.000 kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR LsNM kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0

Just got this from Apple dev team:

A fix is in development and we will follow up when it's available.

No ETA and they sent a similar email a month or so ago. I have the impression from the news reports that Apple's dev team are working flat out on 10.10 so I'd expect the fix will be released about the same time rather than ahead of that time... I.e. June(?). Also 10.9.4 is in the works.

I wish they would hurry up about it. I'm a pro user and this is killing my workflow, freezing during mid-video renders and having to start all over again just isnt acceptable. I appreciate teething problems in the beginning but this is well documented on this thread and has been for quite some time now.

It leaves me with a very sour taste in my mouth after shelling out £2500 on what should be considered a bombproof piece of kit. A MacPro was next on my list with an apple display but i will be seriously reconsidering this as a viable option if the stability of the system is so flimsy!

I would like to got to my nearest apple store and ask them *** is going on, but i know they havent got a clue either! They would just take it in for testing, maybe relace the logic board and not resolve the issue. All i would acheive is loosing money due to downtime of the machine!

FFS SORT IT OUT!

Same for me.

I got my MBP Late 2013 and freezes on me without any warning by just clicking some link or going to some page. It has happened mostly (as far as I remember) when I'm browing the web. It doesn't happen very often, let's say since I bought in Jan 2014 it has happened maybe 5 times. I upgraded to 10.9.3 and nothing, still the same.

I wonder if it's a bug in Firefox for Macs that triggers it or an update in Mavericks.

I am experiencing the same issue with my early 2013 15" macbook pro (10.9.4) now. It freezes a couple of times a week usually when I am using a web browser. I have to press the power button to do a hard reboot when it freezes. Super annoying... I am worried about corrupting my hard drive if keep doing hard reboot. I hope this is a software problem rather than a hardware problem.
