Airport Express to speakers via wi-fi

My Airport Base Station is connected via wi-fi to my MacBook. When I plug ithe ABS in, I get a solid orange light. I went to my local genius bar. They thought the problem was that I needed to have the ABS connected to the speakers before I plug it in. That doesn't have any effect.

I don't see the ABS using Airport Base Station. My primary wi-fi is from a Netgear router.

I'm runnning Mavericks and the latest Airport software. This was working about six months ago.

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, a solid amber light on an AirPort indicates that it cannot get out of startup mode, which is almost always a result of a power supply problem in the device.

Try the following as a last ditch effort:

Power off the AirPort for a few minutes

Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort

Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart

You want to see a slow, blinking amber light at this point, which indicates that the AirPort has reset correctly and can now be reconfigured again to work on your network.

If you try this procedure a few times and the light stays solid amber, the AirPort has failed and will need to be replaced.

When I have reset an AirPort Express back to default settings, as you have done here, and I click the AirPort icon as illustrated above and click on AirPort Express, AirPort Setup automatically opens and suggests a setup configuration.

The window looks like this:

If I click the Other Options button there are more configuration choices there.

So far, I cannot duplicate the error that you are reporting, but I will keep trying.

Extend works fine with Netgear the times that I have tried it.

What really happens is that the utility will instead configure the Express to "Add to an existing network", which is another way of saying that the Express will "join" the Netgear wireless network so everything is on the same network.

You can manually choose "Add" under Other Options if you want to go that way.

Try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the Express and then start over and try that way.

If still no luck, we'll have to wait for another user to post who might have some additional information.....or.....start to think about a possible defective AirPort Express.
