MacBook Pro slow to wake from sleep after installing SSD

I have an odd problem with my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (2.7GHz Core i7, 8GB memory). I'm currently running Mavericks, but had the same issue under Mountain Lion.

Some months ago I replaced the original 500 GB hard drive with an SSD, a 480 GB SanDisk Extreme II. It works perfectly and the computer seems lightening fast by comparison, except in one respect: when waking from sleep mode, there is a delay of about 30 seconds before the computer comes back to life. Without going into the details of my trouble shooting path, I'm as certain as can be that the problem is associated with the SSD. In fact, I replaced the original SSD with a new one of the same make and model, and the delay persists. I've tried cloning and swapping the HD and SSD in various states, and the result is alway the same: no delay with the HD, a ~30 second delay with the SSD.

I have my computer set to require a password on waking, and the delay takes either of two forms. Either (1) there's a wait of about 30 seconds before it will accept my password, or (2) it will accept my password, but after I type and enter it there's a delay of about 30 seconds before the password screen disappears and the computer becomes usable.

At this poin, I'm about to reinstall the HD, since the snappier performance of the SSD doesn't compensate for the aggravation of waiting for it to wake up after sleep.

I'll welcome and thank you for any suggestions on a fix.

Having what sounds like the same issue: 2.9GHz i7 mid-2012; the SSD is in the primary drive bay and the HDD is where the optical drive used to be. After opening the lid after it being closed for ~8 hours - regardless of whether it had been plugged in - I pretty much have to cycle the power to get it to respond. The screen just stays dark, although after 20 seconds or so the keyboard backlight will show up. I've used Chameleon SSD Optimizer to turn on trim. I'm wondering if tweaking one of the other settings might resolve the situation but I'm worried about messing something up. Turning on the NOATIME, changing the sleep mode or disabling the sleep image are all options. Not sure I'm brave enough to try any of them 😉

I've been having the same issue for the past 6 months and it seems like it was getting worse (up to a 35-40 second delay), but today I downloaded the latest OS X update (10.9.4) which said in it's notes that it addressed "wake up" issues. After installing, restarting, logging in, and letting my computer sit, I lifted the screen and I was immediately able to type my password and the OS came back up right after.

Maybe I just got lucky because I hadn't opened anything since restarting, but maybe...just maybe Apple finally fixed the issue with this latest update.

Has anyone else had similar results after updating?

I hope the reports of the*.*.4 upgrade apply across the board. As of July 2nd SanDisk told me:

Please, allow us to confirm that we have had a few reports on the issue previously.

We have reported this to our engineering team and we are working on it, but currently we do not have an update.

We totally understand your concern and we are doing our best to have a solution as soon as possible. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When I asked if a replacement to another one of their products would help I was told:

Unfortunately, the issue is not related to a specific SSD model. We are currently working on the issue trying to determine what causes this malfunction that we see with different SSD models. A replacement with a different model would not resolve the issue at this point. Of course if we determine that the issue is with a specifc model we will be more than happy to offer an upgrade.

Be so kind to be patient hoping that our engineers will have a solution soon.

Maybe the latest update fixes it. If so I would have liked SanDisk to send an update email but my ticket is just a cog in the Great Wheel 🙂 Will post if I'm as successful as blastrx.

Forget SandDisk SSD. I had the same problem and this is the official answer from Sandisk :

Thanks for emailing SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

I am the supervisor with SanDisk and will be assisting you further with this case. To begin with I would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. Please note that the issue you are having is a known issue not only with the SanDisk SSD's but also with SSD/HDD of other brands.

Our SSD's does not exhibit this behavior on any other OS or platform except MAC OSX 10.9 Mavericks. Also, Apple is aware of this issue and its mentioned in the release notes of MAC 10.9.4 that this release will fix the reliability of waking from sleep and issue that prevented some Macs from automatically connecting to known Wi-Fi networks.

However, it seems that this issue has not been completely addressed by this release. Unfortunately at this point in time we don't have a recommended fix for this issue and our engineering team is also aware of it. Also, at this time we would not be able to commit if a fix for this issue will be released in future.
