boost graphics card?

I convert video files alot. The issue im running into with my MBP is that it doesnt even take a full minute and the built in fan starts up and it sounds like its on high. The videos usually take between 30 and 90 minutes to fully convert. So i'm sure you can see my concern with the fan going crazy for that full amount of time. A desktop isnt an option because i need to take it with me places. So what i want to do is upgrade the graphics card? Or maybe an external option? it would also be nice if i could improve speed for the files being converted.

If you upgraded the graphics card to a more powerful one, there is a good chance it would have higher energy requirements and produce more heat. This would not make the fan situation any better, and might even create a higher demand on the cooling system and fans.

With Thunderbolt it is possible that you may be able to put a desktop graphics card in an external Thunderbolt chassis and plug that into a MacBook Pro, but I don't know if there are any graphics cards that your video software supports that would work that way.

It looks like you're on the edge of where more RAM could help.

Look to see if any one or two processes are using a lot of CPU. And what apps are you running/what are you doing at the time?

Very little activity on both fronts, then. In terms of moving memory around, that's almost no data rate (you could move more data per second by merely surfing a web page of photos) and nearly no disk space used, if the numbers are transcribed correctly. Typical swap sizes should be at least 500-1000MB...for light usage.

Sounds like this is not about disk and RAM but more about CPU and/or GPU.
