Quicktime codecs?

I'm perplexed by all the codecs out there for Quicktime and occasionally get sent a client video which only shows a white screen. When I check the file info, no Codec is specified. So I have two questions:

Is there a website where I can find an up-to-date list of all QT Codecs for Mac;

If a Codec isn't specified in the file info, is there any chance of ever watching the content?

An up-to-date list of all QT Codecs for Mac
(The server appears to be down at the moment, try later)

Personally, I've never seen a Codec not listed in the QT Show Movie Properties/Format Column Window. I would suggest installing four programs which will help with various videos; MPEG Streamclip, ffmpegX, VLC, and D-Vision. You can find these Apps at VersionTracker.

ffmpegX and VLC are very helpful in determining the Codecs of Videos. MPEG Streamclip has a Save as AVI.component QT Plugin that will allow rapid conversion from MOV to AVI. This is helpful when editing AVIs in QT and then saving back to AVI verses MOV.

D-Vision is helpful in fixing AVIs that have Timecode breaks, changing the 4cc code of AVIs, and other tasks. An Example; I edited a DivX 3.11 AVI in QT Pro and saved it as AVI (my DivX player will not play a MOV). When saving as AVI, the 4cc code was changed to DivX 4.1.2. This resulted in a White screen in QT because the DivX 4.1.2 Codec is different from the DivX 3.11 Codec. I opened the edited AVI in the D-Vision Tools section and changed the 4cc code back to DivX 3.1.1, which then allowed proper playback in QT. That's the sort of problems you can run into when dealing with Codecs. Sometimes a simple procedure requires a little bit of Knowledge and Experience to overcome frustrating drawbacks.

Are we having fun yet?

I've noticed that the Movie Info window sometimes displays a , (comma) where the video codec would be shown. This started happening after the .0.4 update.
It seems that some third party components "interfere" with the Movie Info window data. My 6.5.2 and Panther machine still work correctly.
I haven't tried to isolate just which one (or combination) causes the comma to show instead of the codec. It doesn't happen to most common codecs, like those from QuickTime, and I can usually find the codec from the Movie Properties window.
But the Movie Properties window is a "Pro" feature.

I have a problem listening to streaming Windows Media files too.

How do I tell which codec is needed and how do I update the codecs included in my Quicktime player?

I would post a link the page giving me grief, but it requires a PW and UN. If someone out there knows how to help, I can pass that info on on a pre person basis, but I cant post it on a public board.
