ox 10.9 does not support Canon i9950 printer drivers

Has any one else experienced loosing the printer drivers since upgrading to Mavericks? My excellent Canon i9950 8 ink photo A3 printer worked fine since the upgrade, until it needed a replacement ink cartridge. From that point on, only 3 of the inks would print. Canon were no help as they have no drivers to support my printer with 10.9. As it is an old model they say it is not likly to develop any. I have tried using my upgraded macbook pro with same results. Unless I can find a solution I will have to either re install Snow Leopard(retrograde step) or ditch the printer and buy a £hundreds new printer! Thanks Apple you should have thought of this and given us some warning! I am told that I can plug a conection into my network hub but does not have a lead socket to fit.

Any ideas anyone?

You could look at this system to allow you to run SL but it would need to be the server edition.

I don't agree with you that this is Apples problem, any upgrade can cause problems and it is upto the person performing the upgrade to check on compatility etc.

That is my opinion of course, your entitiled to yours.

Hope you get a good resolution to the problem

Hi rack0 tack0, thanks for the link I will give it a try. Re the upgrade I have only ever upgraded once before to Snow Leopard and there were no issues so didnt expect any this time. If there were any warnings prior to downloading MvK I missed them.

Can you tell me where to look for possible issues for future upgrades before instalation? It would be handy to know as I shall be wary next time. Really the issue is that it is an elderly printer but it workes fiine(or did) and hopefully Canon might bring out a compatable upgrade.

Thanks for the interest.

My approach to any upgrade is to use a clone of my system on an external drive and upgrade that to the latest version, I don't do this for maintenance releases i.e 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 but on new software, 10.8.x to 10.9.x. I would use that routine.

If I was using my machines for work I would do that for point releases as well.

With the external drive running the new system I can test my software and hardware and find any problems, then decide how to proceed. I also have a backup of my working system in case of any problems. I do find the machine runs slower on the external drive but good enough for test purposes.

There would probably be no warnings when you upgraded, with the range of peripherals available, not just printers, it would be impossible for Apple to test all configurations that could be out in the field.

This may seem 'over the top' but it is what I do. If your system and peripherals are fairly new most would have no issuses, I have had none in the last 4 upgrades but I do what I do from past experience of fixing and upgrading a variety of computers not just Apple.

It sounds an interesting project to get SL server running for your printer, depends on how much the cost of the software compared with a new printer.

Hope you get it sorted out to your satisfaction.

Thank you. I think I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. Never knew one could clone a system. Now I will find out! Odd my Brother B&W laser printer had no issues after the upgrade though but then it is a bit newer.

I think perhaps an upgrade of my printer is a good option as I dont know yet know enough about software issues to attempt a resolution and as it is almost 10 years old it might be a good time to retire it. Parts will be impossible to obtain too I imagine.

I suppose I could re load the SL disc but that seems a retrograde step and would probably lead me into all sorts of other issues that would be time consuming to resolve.

Thanks again for your advice and knowledge.

I have the same printer and it's a very frustrating issue as I would otherwise like to upgrade to iOS9. I didn't upgrade having had fingers burned with a Xerox printer under iOS8 - the updated driver took just under a year to appear!

With th i9950, interesting to note that Canon have not supported since iOS6 but it still works fine under iOS8. This makes it all a bit unpredictable.

I can only advise not upgrading until you are sure or taking the time to do the rack0 tack0 Cloning approach. This applies to all printers, scanners and other hardware peripherals.

just as a thought, I wonder if the printer / scanner manufacturers would be more ready to update if they thought customers would be prepared to pay a modest fee for new drivers? Not wishing to be cynical but I expect they would prefer us to buy new printers...

Thanks MofDz I had a look at the site and it looks promising, however I am going to bite the bullet(gulp) and buy a new a2 printer in the NY. I have been looking at the Epson 3880 which has good reviews. If it is ink thirsty I will have another look at Print Fab and let you know.

I like the guitar-Im a Taylor/Takaminie and Fender man myself!

Haappy Christmas.

First did you happen to check Canon's web site an make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer.

Just for grins try this Power down UNPLUG your Printer. Next turn your Mac clear OFF. After you have done this plug in your Printer to your Mac. or Power the Printer back up and wait a minute now restart the Mac and see if you get it to print Make sure that you have opened your System Preferences and added your Canon so the Mac recognizes it

Hmmm???

I've got the same printer and it works fine in 10.9.2. I stumbled on this thread because I've just re-installed Mavericks after upgrading the HDD and realised it didn't have drivers for the i9950.

My new install is now on 10.9.3 and when I tried to print these 3 options were struck-through "Quality", "Color Options" & "Borderless Printing". I've never seen struck-through menu items before, greyed out, yes but never struck through. Booting from my SuperDuper backup of 10.9.2, everything works just fine.

My old 10.9.2 was an upgrade from 10.8, i.e. I had 10.8 installed and then updated to 10.9 via the AppStore. This seems to be why the i9950 driver was working.

On this new install, when I had installed the driver (downloaded from canon) it had asked if I wanted to install Developer Tools as it required a command that isn't in the default OSX installation anymore. I installed DevTools afterwards but without any difference. I also re-installed the driver having since installed Dev Tools, again no change.

So my next options were, in order of painlessness:

  1. Copy the driver files from my SuperDuper (backup/clone) of my 10.9.2 install;
  2. Copy back the SuperDuper backup to my new HDD (but I was going for a clean install)
  3. Re-install 10.8, install the i9950 driver and then do an AppStore update to 10.9.3

I started at the top of the list, copied over /Library/Printers/Canon from the backup to the new installation. Upon adding the i9950 it said the Printer Driver had not been installed correctly, did I want to fix it? Uhm, Yeah! It repaired the driver installation and to my utter amazement we have an i9950 driver installed with "Quality", "Color Options" & "Borderless Printing" no longer disabled. It's Saturday today so maybe I should buy a Lotto ticket too.

I have to point out that these options were dispabled printing from Preview but Safari didn't seem to have any issue - not sure what that's all about.

So my recommendation is try installing 10.8 on a spare drive or even a USB key, or onto a VM if you're familiar with how to do that; install the i9950 driver onto that then copy that over to your 10.9.x installation.

Bit of a shame as I've been looking for an excuse to retire the i9950 and get something that can Airprint without being attached to a system, but I'm sure we'll have more problems with 10.10.
