I have MS OS X Version 10.6.8.can I upgrade directly to Maverick or do I need to go to Mountain First? Help!

As long as your Mac is capable, you can directly install Mavericks.
Make sure you are aware what software you depend upon that will not work in Mavericks.
Anything that is PowerPC-based will not work beyond Snow Leopard.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
If you have applications that you want to use that aren’t compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on or you can run Snow Leopard server in a virtual mode.
