Wifi does not work correctly on iPad Mini w/ Retina display

I've found that Wifi does not work properly on the iPad mini w/ Retina display.

Some background: I own three iPads (iPad mini w/ retina display, iPad mini, and iPad 3rd gen), an iPod touch 5th gen, and a Macbook Air, and use them all frequently with my pocket Wifi router.

None of them exhibit any Wifi problems whatsoever except for my iPad mini w/ retina display.

Here are the details:

  1. In the middle of using Wifi with my pocket Wifi router, the Wifi connection will abrubptly drop, then reconnect. After the Wifi reconnects, it is no longer able to connect to the internet (even though Wifi itself is connected).
  2. Once the iPad mini w/ retina display's Wifi gets into this state, the following may or may not restore WiFi temporarily:
    1. Restart the device
    2. Reset network settings
  3. Yet, even if connectevitiy is restored, the problem will happen again within minutes.
  4. When the iPad mini w/ retina display gets into this state, the Wifi on my iPod touch, other iPads, and on my Macbook Air work perfectly fine, so I know the problem is not with my Wifi device or it's connection, but specifically with the iPad mini w/ retina display

Note:

The iPad mini w/ retina display never has any issues with my home or work Wifi networks. The problem only happens when connected to my pocket Wifi device. Yet, all of my other iOS devices and my MacBook Air work perfectly with my pocket Wifi device, therefore I know the problem is not with the pocket Wifi device, but with the iPad mini with retina display.

Solutions:

  • Resetting the iPad mini w/ retina display to factory settings does not solve the problem
  • Resetting network settings on the iPad mini w/ retina display does not solve the problem
  • I have even replaced my original iPad mini w/ retina and got a new one. Yet, the new device exhibits the exact same behavior as the original device.

Conclusion:

  • I know this is not a hardware problem (since it happened with both my original as well as replacement device).
  • I know this is not a problem with my pocket WiFi router, since it works perfectly with all of my other iOS devices and MacBook Air.
  • Therefore, this must be a software / firmware bug with the iPad mini w/ retina display. Apple will need to fix this in a future software update.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

I would like to point out that this did not solve my problem.

As I stated in my original post, replacing my iPad mini w/ Retina display with a new device did not solve my problem, as the same issue kept happening even with the new device.

For me, what fixed the issue was updating the firmware on my portable WiFi device. Apparently, the iPad mini w/ Retina display is not compatible with the way WiFi worked on my protable WiFi device prior to it's firmware update.

I just bought a new ipad mini retina and I have a problem with wifi too. Somewhere works and somewhere doesn't. The big problem is that my home is one of the places where it doesn't work. If I connect through my iphone, no problems, but on my home wifi doesn't work. It connects to the router, no problem there but no internet. It just works and works but never get through. I have no problem connecting to the same router with two iphones, macbook, nokia lumia, android tablet, pc, ... just ipad mini doesn't work. That's a big problem and I don't know what to do, do I have to change the router just because of this ipad?? What's the thing with this ipads?

I am having the same problem with my ipad retina. This is so annoying and frustrating. I can't even use it properly now. I took it to the service center and they didn't find anything. The connection is ok there and they said if I want diagnostic I can leave my ipad there for 2 to 3 weeks which is too loongg!! So they try doing system restart, which we all can do. My ipad worked good for 1.5 days. Just when I thought the problem has been resolved it just started again!!!

I am having this EXACT same problem. My wife and I both got iPad mini retina a couple of months ago. We have the same problem. I've tried everything mentioned by the OP, with no luck. I've even exchanged one, still having the same problem.

I've tried changing the security on my rounder, turned on (and off) the QOS, still not relief.

My problem was that, once I borrowed one of these disconnecting ipads and brought it at another location, for a week, did not disconnect once. So what gave?

Then realized that, though not obvious, the problem was often affecting as well my macbook (be it that it reconnected on its own) and ocasionally my cell. The iphone, turns out, ALWAYS reconnects as it negotiated the 3G data vs Wifi protocol. As it wants to update as we wake it up, or in background, it has to decide, use the Data or Wifi? If ANY wifi is present, the iPhone protocol begins an aggressive network reconnect. Ipads, wifi only, do not have this constant hand shaking, and when dropped by the router, tend to remain dropped.

The problem was resolved - but clearly not an Apple issue in my case. Turns out most of these new routers have a 'power save' option that, to save power, stops trasmitting to devices after a period on standby. Disabled that after a tech described the same phenomenon, in which the tablet appeared connected but no data circulated.

Second issue, had a granite countertop where I often placed the gadgets. Turns out that, with the angle of the router projected electromagnetic wave orientation, the granite deflected the signal. Tried several devices placed on the granite, surely, at some point they stopped responding. The cell as well, be it once. Had I let it sync 3g vs Wifi, it woul dhave reocnnected on its own. As for the router, with the Power Save option disabled, my issue went away as well and never came back.

I'm having the same problem, too. I bought my mini retina especially to watch Netflix late at night so as not to disturb others with a big TV on. After about 45 minutes the wifi stops and I have to stop and start Netflix again. It's very frustrating. I read all the problem solving solutions that don't seem to work. I am seriously thinking of attempting to return this device and get something else. I have an old iphone 4 that works with the wifi perfectly. Boo on Apple--how can this be happening to a newer device?

After numerous tries, and one exchanged device, see my answer above. It is not your tablet, it is your router. the reason- and only reason- your iPhoen works is because your iPhone alternates with 3G and Wifi automatically if one disconnects. It may have in just 10 seconds- but as a default if having to download 3G vs WiFi, as you know, the iPhone will default to reacquiring the available WiFi hence why it may appear the iPhone never drops.

In my testing I discovered the iPhones were also dropping, and caught one twice doing it. However, it also reacquired the wifi as soon as I pushed an app. A wifi only tablet may very well remain diconnected once the router powered down (even if the signal says connected)

The router may disconect it for two reason:

- power save options in which, to reduce the workload, when not used after a while it reduces signal output- most modems do that as a "pwer Nap' feature

- router issues, particularly drop in or out

- location. Interesting we used to keep the ipads on a granite countertop, and iphones not. Noticed that if placed deep inside the granite area, the router below would just bounce the signal when dropping power.

The point is that you would need to loan your router to someone, with a steady network, and compare it there. I tried it in two locations and eventually ruled that all dropping issues were router related. The IOS seems to have improved the way it reacts to dropped signals.
