Massive Battery Drain After Mavericks Upgrade on 11" 2013 MacBook Air?

I got my Air about month before Mavericks came out and the battery life was amazing on it. I was easily getting 14-10 hours of life using Chrome and Air Mail App, along with Power Point and MS Word. After the upgrade to Mavericks, it was slow but I started to notice that my battery life during classes was draining so much faster than before and I had not added anything 3rd party software, just the upgrade. I am now down to about 3.5 - 4.5 hours of battery life doing about the same things as before the upgrade. I did a couple of apps and I added (Sims 3 game). However, I have yet to touch it because of the diminished battery life.

I have included a copy of my Etrecheck, can somone take a look and let me know if you think I need to clean something off?

I did do the SMC reset and that seemed to to give a little juice (like putting new tire on your car but still not where it was before the Mavericks upgrade) as I am up to about 6 hours of battery life after the SMC reset.

Please let me know what other information you might need from me that would help and thank you so much!!

I was easily getting 14-10 hours of life using Chrome and Air Mail App

You may have made a typo there, 12 hours plus was possible on a 13" PRE-Mavericks and post......, but the 11" could not get near your indications pre-Mavericks.

Mavericks for most people increases life as has been reported by arstechnica and others, and myself getting roughly 20% longer batt. life and 13+ hours on a 13"

Yes, in your list discontinue use of CHROME temporarily, many indications are it has power issues in Mavericks currently (it was bad before now worse)

Do some testing with Safari instead, and also reset SMC

SMC reset

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Also FIREFOX released a new version today, build 26, which is optimized for power consumption on portable notebooks etc.

However the time "remaining" indicator should not be presumed correct, as much testing on my part and others indicates that indicator is not accurate currently, however that has no bearing on ACTUAL time remaining, and is only an estimate.

Specifically after a new operating system, different applications sometimes lag in catch-up in optimization. (As history has revealed as is currently)

Firefox, for example, accomplished this today with ver. 26.0

Chrome, to date, has not.

Much testing on many peoples behalf, indicate power excess use from Chrome with Mavericks, both before and especially after the release of Mavericks.

Go to your Activity Monitor and verify Chrome (and other) power consumption at both use and in idle for confirmation.

going thru your list from Etrecheck above indicates nothing outstanding from power consumption.

3rd party application optimization for use with Mavericks rests with said party, be it Chrome or otherwise, and not with Apple Inc.

You may consider an appt. at the Genius bar and have a one on one examination and diagnostics as you are rightly entitled either in or out of warranty, as this is the case.

Peace 😊

OK, here we go:

In general: Safari 7, Mavericks, Mail 7, this makes the Mavericks system very different from Mountain Lion.

1. You will have to uninstall Origin: this is not compatible.

2. Chrome causes a lot of "friction" in Mavericks, uninstalll it and use Safari.

3. I saw that you uninstalled a lot of software iwth help of an uninstaller (Apptrap perhaps?): Uninstall that uninstaller also, when you are ready with uninstalling.

---- this will probably solve all or most of the issue.

- Also you can delete both Adobe.PDF.Viewer plugins, no need to have that in Safari 6, or 7.

Then you can at the same time delete oldbrowser plugin.

- Update flashplayer or throw it out.

I will look in your settings after this, make a new etrecheck list.

1. Check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.

2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.9 or later.

3. You can also try resetting the SMC.

4. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.

5. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Dec 15, 2013 7:48 PM in response to Lexiepex

Hi Lex,

Not sure why but I had a hard time finding all of the related files to get rid of Origin. But I think I finally got them. I just uninstalled Flash and Chrome. I don't like Safari but all well. I suppose I can deal with it it until Apple fixes this battery issue and then maybe I can go back to Chrome. Safari isn't too happy with certain websites, under the Preferences/Security there is an error message that reads "Google Safe Browsing Service Is Not Available. Has not been updated in 8 days."

Haven't noticed a change in battery since doing all of this so let me know if it will take a couple of days to reset. Or if you see anything else that I can do to help. Thank!

Good work.

Safari is a bit hesitant at times that is because it is much better at keeping rubbish out.

Chrome is leaking memory (Mavericks new method of handling memory has probably problems with it) and not safe.

I am not sure about Airplay1.9, it is not up to date I think, and you better dump it at all.

Also I think you may take out

npgtpo3dautoplugin

from the internet plugins.

Everything about your battery and usage of the mac is OK now I think.

I have the Standby delay at 4200 instead of 10800 (which is never).

Give it a few days.
