I have an iPad Air. I bought a lightning to 30-pin adapter so I could use my old HDMI cable connector but I get a message saying this does not function with my iPad. Can this be true? And what about the 30-pin cable which I use to connect my old iPad to a projector? Will this no longer function with my new iPad?

Quoting from the Apple Store page for the adapter (emphasis mine):
"This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories.* Supports analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Video output not supported."
So yes, it's true, and no, it won't. You'll need a Lightning to HDMI adapter.

Sorry but from my original post I now need a lightning digital av adapter for my TV and a further lightning to VGA adapter for my projector. That's £80 total.

You didn't say that your projector was VGA. But yes, if you now need to buy both, the cost is £80 total, or £55 more than you expected if you can return the LIghtning to 30-pin adapter.
