Information on 2013 iMac FD issue / USB2-3 Issue and Driver Incompatibility issue

I've created this new thread to outline the THREE different issues currently being discussed in various threads here and elsewhere in the hope of clarifying a few things and cleaning the 'mess' up a little!

There are currently THREE specific and different issues that a Mac owner might have in relation to Audio problems.

Some Users may well have all three problems at the same time or a combination of any/all of them.

Issue #1 - If you own a 2013 iMac with a Fusion Drive fitted then you wil get audio dropouts, clicks and other audio issues.

To test, unplug all 3rd party interfaces and test with internal Audio only. Most people report audio dropout and noise via internal Audio.

Status - Wating on a software fix from Apple.

Possible temporary workaround options -

1) Boot from an External HD, (Very effective with a high reported success rate) and wait until fix is issued by Apple.

2) Split the FD into separate SSD and Mech Drives... (Fairly effective... but not as good as the ext drive menthod it seems) and wait for fix from Apple.

3) Contact Apple and ask for a non FD replacement iMac (when/if possible)

4) Wait for the Apple Fix

Issue #2 = If you use a USB2 device/interface/whatever and it is connected to a USB3 port then that device might have problems.

Note: This issue does not affect Firewire devices for obvious reasons...

Possible Workarounds - Note: Users have reported varying levels of success with these fixes depending on the USB2 device in question. and what else is connected to your Mac.

1) Use a USB2 powered hub. Connect device to powered hub and connect powered hub to USB3 port

2) Use a Thunderbolt hub. Conect device to TBolt hub and hub to TBolt port on Mac.

Status - Waiting on fixes from the makers of these USB2 devices to correct the problem where possible.

Issue #3 - Incompatible drivers/hardware with either 10.9 and/or 10.8. Affects mainly audio interfaces that use drivers to communicate with your Mac... but can also affect USB2 Midi interfaces and Audio interfaces those that are supposed to be 'class compliant' and therefore do not use drivers... Class compliant devices have been fixed in the past by firmware updates whenever possible, by the makers of the device. In some cases however, makers of certain USB2 devices have not been able to correct the issue and have released new versions of their hardware to reolve issue (which of course were not provided as free replacements for users with these probmatic devices!)

Workaround

Roll back to previous working OS X version whenever possible and wait for updated drivers from Maker of your device.

Status - Awaiting updated drivers from the Makers of the USB2 device.

As can be seen from the above list, it is possible that certain users who have a 2013 imac with an FD fitted and own a USB2 interface could be subject to all three issues... and you should be keenly aware of this fact. When Apple release a fix for Issue #1 you may still have problems relating to either/both Issue #2 and #3... depending on the USB2 device you own....

Important Note:

Please feel free to ask questions regarding these three issues and their descriptions but try not to clutter up the thread with other problems or posts regarding comments such as "Why isn't Apple/Maker of device fixing this?" or "I'll switch to "Name of other DAW" if this isnt fixed soon..." as frankly no one here cares about such things as none of us work for Apple 🙂

Thanks!

Right..... That should do it...

I've not come across anyone who has bootcamped the FD but I don't think that will affect things so long as you boot from the external drive...

I might be wrong though as it could mean the FD software is loaded upon boot to whichever drive and that would still cause an issue but hopefully not.

Guess it's time to try and see!

Just to chime in here I had the exact same issue with a new iMac and a 1TB fusion drive, Mavericks and a Scarlett 2i2 USB interface. Since moving to the 10.9.2 beta the issue has gone!

So just to reassure folks 10.9.2 should fix it. One little note, initially after moving to 10.9.2 the issue remained, but if you're using a Scarlett interface you need to use the class compliant drivers. Once I switch to those all was good.

Hope this reassures/helps!

hi ETA

i confirm using internal microphone with photoboot for example is catastrophic ... and my external presonus card is off course not working good (recognized but static and low output)

Hi Yossi,

i got the problem and i cannot beleive Apple wont refund you, there is a failure on what they were supposed to sell to us... if thre is no apple 10.9.2 solution We all should be refunded or given a non FD imac .. i bought that imac (16 RAM) to replace my 2007 one especially for recording purpose ; i cannot accept to be screwed like this. Just for my info, could you tell me if your internal microphone records well ? mine is terrible .. noise is catastrophic 😟

Audio problem solved!!!.

I returned my 21.5" Imac with fusion drive and exchanged it for one with a 500GB SSD. Everything now works perfectly. I've spent the last 3 x days testing my Apogee Duet Firewire and RME Babyface USB. No clicks, pops, static. Recorded guitar and vocals using Logic. Left logic running on a loop for a few hours. Spotify, iTunes, Youtube through Safari all play and sound great. None of these things worked for more than a few minutes (if at all) on the iMac with Fusion drive. I'm running 10.9.1

It's taken endless calls to Apple Care and numerous emails to Apogee and RME over the last 2 x months. I took the iMac to the Apple "genius" people and they said they'd had similiar issues. They made a note in the Applecare documents that this imac wouldn't work with Audio devices and suggestred it be changed. I paid the upgrade costs ($360) for the SSD model.

I'll never buy the latest untested computer again. I'd heard people say you should always wait and let other people do the testing but I probably got sucked in by the glossy ads. Newer, bigger, faster is better right?

Apple should be warning people who are buying these machines for audio production that there are major issues. I spent $2600 on a machine that wouldn't do what it said it would. I then spent $800 on an RME Babyface because I was told it was an external audio issue. Then paid $360 to upgrade to to SSD.

Don't mean to rant. I just hope someone reads this before buying an Imac with Fusion drive. But then again why would you read this first?

Hi Hankboomer,

So I had the FD problem with external sound card.

I bought the machine in Israel, where we don't have an Apple store here 😟, only a local authorized seller,

although the machine was costume build in the US.

When I found out the problem, and contacted the local seller, he was not ready to refund.

they sent the machine to do some lab tests, and as much as they concern, it is working properly.

I also contacted Apple, but they sent me back to my local seller...

so, I had no solution. I saw the posts about using external disk - I tried it but still I had problems.

then I saw the spliting the FD posts, I did it and voilà! no problems!

as for your question, internal mic/speakers worked fine.

so now, I am waiting (like many other) to the 10.9.2 update, to see if it solve the problems.

I will need to refuse my splitted FD.

Anyone who is updating, please post in this group any conclutions.

thanks to everyone for posting here.

Just want to add my voice to the plea to Apple to fix this

27" late 2013 iMac with FD and yes, unfortunatly audio issues:

i use an external audioengine D1 DAC and all i get is plopping, ticking sound and sometimes even worse cracking noise.

it's not the DAC, because it works fine on my older iMac, so it's my shiny brand new 27" iMac with FD.

Please apple fix this!!!!

For those posting here, asking Apple to 'fix things'

Your pleas will fall upon deaf ears here because this is not a place where Apple 'exists' in any real, worthwhile sense... It is a community made up of other users so, for the most part, you are preaching to the choir...

Hey Guys,

just want to say hi and mention that I have the same issue.

iMac late 2013

1 TB Fusion Drive

Bought a Samseon meteor microphone.

Every Recording stopped after approx 2 minutes. After that I only had noise and pop sounds.

I experimented a lot. (no usb hub at all, adding a usb hub with external power etc. ) but the mic kept dying.

One time it killed my whole USB BUS. Even Bluetooth keyboard and mouse stopped working. The iMac did not freeze - a video kept playing and I received imessages -. I was just unable to move anything.

Had to do a hard reset.

After that experience I send the mic back because I thought it had a failure and bought another one.

(Blue Yeti microphone ) But I still have the same issue.

Microphone keeps dying. Sometimes kills the whole usb bus. Sometimes it reinitialize. ( I can see this on a usb hub which shows me whether it's data+currency or only currency.

I'm really really disappointed. Going to call Apple care tomorrow after 2 weeks of wasting time and a lot of money.

edit:

internal audio works fine. no clicks or pop or anything.
