Where are my iphotos stored on my iMac?

I have iphoto 8.1.2 running on an imac with OSX 10.9. I am looking for where my photos and videos in iphoto are stored on my computer. Finder doesn't find them unless they are also saved in the "documents", "downloads" or "pictures" folders.

Other threads say to click in iphoto on "file" and then on "reveal location", but it doesn't appear in my dropdown. Any advice?

And also, a little annoying as I often edit a photo to bring down the size, i.e. use of disk space on my mac, but you are saying that it won't so thats a total waste of time. But why keep disk space using aspects of photos that I don't need?

Exactly. If you don't need them then don't use iPhoto. iPhoto is for people who do. People who want a non-destructive workflow as they do not want generational loss when editing Jpegs. You don't want that, so you should not use iPhoto. But I don't know why it's annoying. The app is doing exactly what it is designed to do. The problem here is that you don't understand the app and what it's for.

Thank you!

This was very helpful :-)

I only wish Apple was as honest about their products as the iPhoto intro tries to make out how wonderful it is, and refrains from mentioning of these,...what I consider,..major flaws (as I said above as it seems they are coming from a perspective of wanting you to need more disk space you will buy more cloud use or equipment)..

These are not flaws. That's like complaining that Excel is a hopeless Word Processor. It is, but that's not the job it's designed to do. If you try and write a novel in Excel, it's user error. iPhoto is designed for people who care about the quality of their photos and who do not want them destroyed by generational loss inherent in Jpegs when you repeatedly edit them. You think the app is something else. The error is yours.

Thank you - This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm surprised by the interpretations of the initial question. While I get that people are trying to help, it is odd that others are trying to interpret what they are asking. i.e.) "I would like a piece of pie"....I bought you a pizza because there are both triangle foods. Your welcome.

Thank you for answering the question. I am now copying my pictures to a drive and feel warm and fuzzy ...despite the weather.

This is not really a reply - it is a question. I am a VERY comfortable PC user but my college daughter convinced my several years ago to make the switch to Apple products (iphones, iPads, iMac, etc). So - all I want to do right now is put a picture on an Ebay listing to sell some junk. I took a picture with my iphone and imported it into my iPhoto library on my iMac. When I go to Ebay it tells me to upload the pictures I want on my listings. I have NO IDEA how to find my pictures. On a PC my picture would be listed as files and I could find them and upload them to Ebay. How do I do this on my iMac?

You can set up your Mac to work like Windows, if you didn't it's because you chose not to. Equally you can choose to run a Photo manager on your Windows machine. It's not a Mac v Windows thing, it's just that you didn't research things before setting your system up.

For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:

It's the first one you want.

Hi there,

I don't think i fit in any of your "some folks" lists. I'm a photographer and I like to keep my pics where and how ever I like. I really don't like to use "iPhotos" or better nowadays called just "Photos". I deal with thousand of photos from my work and I'm pretty happy with my way of organize them, but every now and again I have to go throw this painful process of finding my iphone pics out of my mac to store them the way I want and surprisingly enough the way mac like to store my images seems to became more and more complex every year. Is like mac want to make sure I never use any other software apart from their own, and guess why? Maybe they want to make sure the anybody in the world who want to ever print a picture or and album will have to use their SUPER EASY TO FIND create a new album "25 x 25 cm 20 pages £26.99"? But anyway since the way I've find the picture last time is now not working anymore does anybody know how to find the actual folder containing my iphone pictures in El Capitan 10.11.5?

Your problem is that you don't know how to use your Mac. There is no requirement on you to use iPhoto, Photos (and they're entirely different application, by the way) if you don't want to. If you use Image Capture (in the Applications Folder), then you can choose to move photos from your phone to anywhere you choose.

So, no, it's not 'like mac want to make sure I never use any other software apart from their own', it's just that you don't know how to use your Mac. Even if you do use these apps there is no requirement for you to print anything via Apple, you can choose any service you want - or even just print things yourself. Again, your confusion is because you don't know how to use your Mac.

No one here can tell you where your photos are if you don't tell us how you go them from your phone in the first place. If you used iPhoto or Photos (because you didn't know how to use your Mac) then simply export the Originals from those libraries. See? Not difficult at all.

Since you refuse to use the supported access methods you are somewhat lost - with El Captain your Photos may be in a number of paces including iCloud - you are using the wrong software and misusing it - it is like using your sports car to carry lumber - it is not the right choice

Photos knows where your photos are and what is needed to use them and at any time you can select them and export to any location of Your choice - as long as you choose to use Photos you can not directly access your photos - you must use the support access methods - if that does not fit your needs then Photos does not fit your needs and you should export the originals of all of your photos and use software that works like you want

Your photos are located in your pictures, or wherever photo library is located. Right click photo library, click show package contents. All your pictures are located inside the folder called masters.

As has been noted many times earlier, do not mess around with things inside the package contents. If you move or delete pictures it could lead to a bigger mess. But copying is 100% fine. If you want the whole folder just copy the masters, then do as you please.

Also, it seems that the people who frequently post on these forums are bent on making everyone do things their way. I don't know why they are so hostile. Constantly telling people that it is their problem. It's like they are trying to drive away mac users and customers.

The much easier way is simply

File -> Export -> Unmodified Original - as stated multiple times in the thread

Even Better:

If you don't want to use Photos then don't use it.

What could be more simple?

And there is so much incorrect information in that post it's ridiculous:

You cannot upload any pictures through photos, such as through gmail. You cannot go into gmail, create a new email, and attach a picture in photo

That's plain wrong. So another one who finds a complex solution to a non problem.

REeally bad advice that will cause many problems for people and is totally incorrect as posted - No one should foollow your advice if their photos have any value to them

That is not our way and we could care less how you use or misuse your Mac - but it is the only way that works relialiblely and is the answer to the OP's questions - your advice is simply incorrect
