Delay in accessing new iPhoto photos for uploading to Internet

I have been experiencing a delay in being able to access new photos in order to upload them to the Internet from iPhoto. For instance, I download some new photos from my camera or phone to iPhoto, and then try to upload them to Facebook or ancestry.com or another site. They simply don't show up in the proper iPhoto album for about 24 hours. However, if I open iPhoto and look for them, they are there. Also, if I put them in the Pictures folder on the hard drive of my iMac I can upload them immediately; it is just iPhoto where there is a problem. But I prefer to use the version I have edited in iPhoto. This has happened on two or three Internet sites, so I have to think it is a function of iPhoto, not Facebook or whatever. Does anyone know the reason for this and how to avoid the delay? It is very irritating. I am using iPhoto version 9.5.1 and OSX 10.9.
