Fonts in the WEB FONTS GROUP: Are those the only *safe* fonts?

I notice that iWeb allows me to choose from a variety of fonts. There are some that I like (Zapfino and Optima) but they are not in the category labeled WEB FONTS. I always believed that if you do not choose a WEB font, then your viewer may not see the font in the style that you choose because it may not be resident in that viewer's browser.

SO, QUESTION:

If I choose Zapfino or Optima, which are NOT in the WEB fonts group, do I run a risk that my viewers will possibly not see the text in Zapfino or Optima?

If I choose fonts from the WEB fonts group, can I be assured that this is what a viewer will see?

Hi Lorna,

I'm using non-Web friendly fonts and iWeb will simply
convert them to an image.

Here's a hot tip 🙂

If you're going to use non-Web friendly fonts make
sure they're in their OWN text box.

Otherwise iWeb will convert the ENTIRE text into an
image

Cheers
Jason

But....... what does that mean, "iWeb will simply convert them to an IMAGE"? An image of a letter that looks like Optima or Zapfino?

But then maybe I ought to just stick with WEB FRIENDLY fonts, then.
Thank you for the heads up. 🙂

Text box where? Hmmm. Maybe I'd really better not consider using Optima and Zafino...... but I love the look of them..............

Most template pages already have a box to enter text into OK

If you type in that no problems - but as soon as you change one word in that big text box to a non-web friendly font the entire text is converted to an image.

So type all the text in the text box with a web-friendly font - then when you come to the non-web friendly font part click on the T (ext) button in the toolbar at the bottom in iWeb and it will create a new text box on the screen.

Type your non-web friendly font text in this box.

Then when you publish the big text box will be text, but the non-web friendly font text box will be converted to an image meaning your site guests get to see the site text as you intended and your site isn't slowed down by loading a big image of text which isn't required

hope that's clearer 🙂

cheers

Hmm. OK. 🙂 I'm printing this out or I'll never remember how to do it. Thank you for explaining this, Jason.

Lorna, Joe again !

Of course it's safe to use whatever fonts you wish.
Go and discover the wonderful world of design. Take a
look/see at my site.

N.B. If you use fonts other then those which comes
with Apple, make sure those 'new' fonts are active.
IWeb will give you a warning anyhow. This happens
when the Mac is turn off and on the next day.

Joe

Wait. So you're saying that I could go ahead and use Optima of Zapfino if I want? No problems arising from that? What if someone has a computer using a browser that doesn't have Optima? Then what? Oh wait. Then the program would reproduce the words as a PICTURE? And that would not slow down the pages loading?

OH, one thing I noticed on the downhill side of Optima: The leading is very tight! Compare the leading of Optima with the leading of, say, Comic Sans MS. Comic Sans is therefore easier to read. But I very much like the look of Optima. Zapfino reminds me of a beautiful, delicate bird gliding aloft, carried by a gentle breeze. Ooooh gentle breeze: Such a cliché. I would not use it for the body of a composition, but I would want to use it somewhere. And I am not even an air sign. I am totally a water sign.

If you choose non-web friendly fonts, or even add
shadows, etc to text, iWeb will publish it as an
image instead of as text. It will look the same
visually. But visitors won't be able to select it as
text, and search engines won't see it as text.

Search engines won't see it as text? Oh oh. That is going to be my reason to use only WEB fonts, then! Wow!
