I am having the same problem. i start typing the name of someone who sent me an emil and the search window drops down a bunch of suggestions, i choose the one that i want and get a "no messages found" reply. i know the emails are there and if i use spotlight it will find them but i want to be able to search in mail as it is much easier to manage what i am looking for than when using spotlight. hope this gets sorted out soon...

I finally spoke to senior apple tech support person and afetr having re-indexed mail and re-installed the os to no avail this guy had me re-index my entire hard drive. it took about 5 hours but now the mail program seems to be working correctly. basically you choose spotlight in the system preferences, hit the privacy tab then add your macintosh HD by hitting the plus button and choosing it then remove it by hitting the minus button and this starts the indexing. you can check to see if its indexing by selecting the spotlight icon in the upper right hand corner. if you are indexing it will give you a status reprt. hope this helps...

I just called Apple Support with the same problem. Spotlight search not working in Mail.

I have macbookpro 15" retina display, running OS 10.9.2. Just bought computer last week.

The tech asked me to go to the Apple (logo in left corner) and go to force quit. Select Mail.

after I did a force quit...spot light worked perfectly in Mail. I hope this helps others with this

issue.

This one helped me, my Spotlight, Finder Search and Mail Search did not work, Tried this one, now all is fine again. Don´t remember where I found this, but credits to some clever guy out there

In terminal, enter:

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

Then enter:

sudo mdutil -E /

In your system preferences you should now be able to go to the Spotlight preferences, then the privacy tab. Click the + button and add your entire hard drive under devices. You shouldn't get an error.

Quit and reopen system preferences. Go back to the privacy tab under Spotlight preferences and this time select your hard drive from the list and hit the - button.

Congratulations. Your mac should begin indexing your drive and some search functions should already be running. Indexing will take several hours depending on the size of your drive.
