you need to open the terminal an go to /var/folders/zz/

once there list the content (ls -la) and check the ownership for folder zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068

should be something like

drwxr-xr-x+ 5 _softwareupdate _softwareupdate 170 Feb 1 16:15 zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068

if the onwer & group is something different to _softwareupdate you will need to change them using the command below

sudo chown -R _softwareupdate:_softwareupdate zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068

Thank you for this thread. I changed ownership permissions as indicated from your ls -la screen shot, but my output includes root/wheel permission to zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000cc000033 and zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000t000006h. Do you know what these services are? Also, output

does not include the clamav and nobody directories in zz. should they be there or am i ok without them? any sudo commands you could provide would be appreciated.

sudo: /var/db/sudo owned by uid 501, should be uid 0

is the extra code i can see there..

all i have done these because i am getting permission error 513 during OS X 10.9.4 updating (from 10.9.3).

please help to solve this problem…

Thank you! I have been struggling with this issue on my work Mac (no issues on my home one) for nearly a year but your solution worked like a champ. Here's what would happen:

1. I got the notification I had one or more updates.
2. I'd then click "Update" or "Update All".
3. Then button would change to "Installed" or I'd get a "513" error but in both cases nothing actually happened.
4. The next time I would check for those same updates they would show as uninstalled.
5. Back to Step 1.😢

The AppStore starts the download but suddenly stops. It shows as if the update was installed, but it's not.

I also tried updating via terminal and it sais the update has been installed… but, again, it's not:
