Question

Assembly code in XCode

Hello everybody!

I'm new to XCode. I have the latest version of XCode under Tiger.

I would like XCode to generate an executable from an assembly code source file. I've searched in many discussions and technical articles in Apple site, but I didn't find anything answering this question.

I'm sure it must be possible without having to use the line command in a shell...

Can someone tell me how I should proceed to do this?

I must add that I have no problem in making C++ or C programs work with XCode.

Create an External Build System project and tell Xcode to use the assembler, as. Double-click the target name in the Groups and Files list to open the target settings window. There should be a Build Tool setting. Give it the value /usr/bin/as.

Thanks a lot! I'll try this asap.
But does this solution create an obj file, or an executable? If it creates an obj file, how shall I proceed to get an executable?

It should create an executable file. The assembler documentation says the default file name is a.out, which is an executable file you can run from the Terminal.

Ok, I tested this. So it does create an a.out file, this is OK.

But as I thought, a.out is not an executable file. I think the linker must be invoked to make an executable of it; but I can't figure out how to do this, and what it should be linked to.

Any idea? 🙂

Hi

Generally, in Unix based systems, a.out is an executable; however, Mac OS X by default doesn't look in the current folder and double clicking doesn't always work if the executable doesn't use a GUI.

I suggest you try executing the program by starting a Terminal window, then using a cd command to get to the folder, then typing: ./a.out

The "./" part tells OS X to search in the current folder.

This is what I actually did and I got an error message. But I think there's a mistake in my assembler code, and maybe the trouble comes from here.
I don't know assembler enough to go further now, but I think my question have been answered.
