Can't change the number of instances in 4.1
iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 27" 3.4GHz Quad-Core i7-SSD-2 GB HD
It seems that Qmaster no longer exists as a stand-alone app.
In other words the absence of the Embedded Apps folder doesn't indicate a problem.

Looks like iMac's, laptops and the Mac mini can't increase the number of instances any more... that şucks.
I fear that may be the case. It's hard to understand why.
Russ
Hopefully they rushed this out for the new Mac Pro and will fix it later. But if this is the case... old/new iMacs (Macs) will no longer be the fastest (or fast) to encode videos.
I don't see de-interlacing any more. Did a test to and changed an interlaced video to progressive... looks ok. I wonder if this is how we do it now.
Wonder if this is how we set fast-start now:
A few last things... using my x265 encoder, it uses all cores (you can set this in the x264 encoder to use all cores), but it still uses only one instance. Also... I have seen up to 3 instance show up in the destination folder. I'll check this one again to make sure. No more by-passing too.
I still get this in the Activity Monitor... goes away (all of them) when quitting Compressor.
If I trun this off the red one goes away.
Using two 2010 iMacs and one 2012 iMac, and a mid/late 2013 Haswell Air, cannot change the number of Compressor instances on any of them.
I was able to add a single additional Compressor instance on a early 2011 Macbook Pro with 16GB ram and an i7.
@David, I must set aside some time to run some tests: straight export from FCPX; 4.07 with cluster; 4.1.
@halemmerich, What the grapevine has been saying is multiple instances requires a minimum of 6 cores. And that if you don't have at least a quad core with 8 virtual cores, you can't even get a single instance. So that would fit the Air, but I don't understand the iMacs unless they have the i5 CPU.
Russ
Hey Russ, I realized I should have specified what CPUs everything has.
All of the iMacs are i5's - so only 2 real cores + 2 virtual
2013 Air (haswell) - i7 - only 2 real cores + 2 virtual
2011 MacBook Pro - i7 - 4 real cores + 4 virtual = 1 additional instance allowed
So, this is inline with the grapevine... =/
This is on my 2013 imac i7 3.5Ghz, 16GB RAM. I'm only allowed 1 instance and it has no effect compared to 0.
The cpu activity is the same either way. 4 at about 70%.
It took the same amount of time to compress either way. When I did have the one instance it mounted that shared volume while compressing, and it went away when completed.
With 4.0.7 I was allowed 8 instances and it would peg all 8 at 100%. Much faster.
How much faster in 4.0.7?
About the same results as Steve Cohen. Approximately twice as fast. I contacted Larry Jordan regarding this.
He said he hadn't had a chance to test it yet, but would get back to me when he did.
I'll post if and when he gives me an answer.
By default, it runs one instances of itself. However, this requires an i5 or i7 processor with a minimum of six cores. The rule of thumb is: set the number of instances to two LESS than the total number of cores on your system. If this is grayed out, or only allows you to set 1 instance, it is because you don't have enough cores.

So this nixes the new Mac Pro quad-core.
What are you saying? I have an i7. Does this 6 core mimimum include virtual cores? If so I have 8. I'm only allowed 1 instance. If you are saying 6 real cores, does this mean I have to purchase the $3999.00 mac pro in order to have more instances? That's rubbish. 4.0.7 allowed me 8 instances and pegged them all.
So after endless screwing around to try to get more than one instance going, it finally works on an 8 core mac pro. I now get 7 instances at once on this computer alone which is what it should be, 97% of the CPU is being used. What I did was to make a new administror account and skrew around endlessly again with all the possible prefs.
