Is it possible to redeem an iTunes gift from someone using another country's iTunes store?

My iTunes account is with the U.S. store. Many of my friends have accounts in other countries. It seems that it is possible to purchase gifts for people with accounts in other countries but that it is not possible to redeem the gift.
