Keynote presentations are missing images

Running Mavericks 10.9 Build 13A603 on MacBook Air and Keynote 6.0.1 (1486).

I love keynote and have used it since day one it was available. Now I hate it. Not because of the toolbar changes (I’m fine with that) but because all my files are messed up.

I have about 100 presentations that are all made with the latest version or converted to the latest file format. They are stored locally in a folder that is shared with others (via google drive). We have used this setup for ages flawlessly. Now, a random selection of the dropped images that are in the presentations are missing. When you open the presentations they are scattered with ?-marks where there used to be beautiful presentation content.

If you create a new presentation the same happens. If you open it on another machine, the ?-marks are everywhere. If you open it on your own machine its messed up.

I assume this has to do with some change in the way Keynote stores it’s dropped images. Anyone else suffering from ?-mark problems? It’s so bad that we are actually using Powerpoint right now!

Gary for such a " well know problem" to have continued undressed for so many years beggars belief, it has inconvenienced many users, wasted many hours of valuable time and created gut wrenching anxiety for many individuals during what is already, typically a time of great stress ..... this can't be good for apple. For the life of me I can't understand how this problem has been allowed to continue. I've made appointments at the apple store many times and no one has been able to explain or provide a solution to the problem. If you have any recommendations so far as engaging with apple on this issue I am a willing participant.

Most users do not experience any major issues with Keynote, however there appears to be a significant number of users who have a variety of problems; from missing slides to not being able to open presentations. I understand these users have not found any way to rectify the issue. If I had these problems I would be using another tool in the box, there are many available.

I tried this--creating a folder, copying all but the index file to it, and renaming it *.key. When I try to open it, I get the following bizarre message:

You need newer versions of OS X and Keynote to open this presentation. Install the latest version of OS X, then download the latest version of Keynote from the Mac App Store.

I have the most current versions of Keynote (v. 6.2.2, dated to 25 August 2014) and of the Mac OS (OS X 10.9.4).

I've had the same sporadic problem of images going missing. No one at the genius bar has any explanation. Some of the theories in this thread are that files have been sent thru one method or another, but my files have never left my laptop. It hasn't happened often enough to cause me to seriously consider going back to PowerPoint, but probably would have if I hadn't had multiple versions of similar presentations so I could copy slides to replace the ones with missing images. NOW A NEW PROBLEM: yesterday Keynote froze, and it took some time for the spinning color wheel to stop so I could work on it again. Once I could check the file I had the majority of text boxes corrupted: alignment of text had been changed, text color changed, and although no images were missing I did find one that had changed position as well as one shape--a line--that had moved (all in the file that was open when the freeze occurred). This is a file of about 75mb, approx 250 slides and 400 images, no video. So far, every time one of these problems has happened, I have a few hours before my presentation to salvage it by copying and pasting slides from similar presentations, but my blood pressure goes up just thinking about the time this will happen right before showtime!! The minds at Apple HAVE to be able to address this issue, right?!

I have a bit of evidence about the problem here.

I have several .key files that I saved to Google Drive within the last two weeks, then downloaded back to my Mac after reformatting my local hard drive. Fortunately, I had also saved most of these files to an external hard drive.

Several of the keynote files that passed through Google Drive now are smaller than the same file on the external drive. If I view package contents, the data folder is the one that is smaller. A number of images are missing, in one case, 24 out of 80. The images are gone so if all I had were the version that passed through Google Drive, it looks like there would be no way to recover the original presentation.

I tried putting the same keynote file up to Google drive and pulling it back down to another computer today. I got some errors indicating that Google Drive could not sync the file when I saved it as a package. But it seemed nevertheless to come through with all the images on the other computer and it opened with no missing images. I seemed not to get the report of a sync error if I saved it as a single file by checked the setting in Keynote: File/Advanced/Change File Type/Single File.

Because I could not reproduce the problem of lost images today, either there was a problem with sending a .key that was a package on a round trip through Google Drive that has now been fixed or it there is an ongoing problem that is intermittent.

I suspect that going forward, it might be safer to set the single file setting in Keynote. The problem here may arise because of some ambiguity about the Google App and the OS think are files that can be treated as independent elements in a tree structure, particularly if Google is trying to save bandwidth by not uploading an image file if it thinks that it already has a copy of it on its servers.

Of course, the main lesson is that it is worth having multiple backups that rely on different hardware and software because there is no way to know if any particular combination of hardware and software is doing what you'd naturally expect it to do.

Unofrtuantely my time arrived to get to the ? and X error message.

I've been using keyonte extensively for a while. But yesterday I lost some images from my keynote presentation.

What I do it's to save the images that I need to me desktop and then insert them into keynote. After saving I delete the images from the desktop but suddenly some of them reappear in the desktop. If I delete them again this images magically disappear from the keynote presentation.

It's a really awful experience. I first noticed that yesterday while teaching and I had a jaw dropping experience.

Is there any solution about this? Apple please fix this or I will have to turn to powerpoint. I just cannot improvise a presentation without images.

Thank you.

This occurred to me the first time last night, and in the meantime the cause and a fix became clear.

In my case the missing images have been the result of a sync issue, as my presentations are on a cloud drive.

Here is how to restore the images: When opening the package of the presentation, all images were actually in the data folder, but there were three files with a conflicting copy besides the actual file, namely index.zip, BuildVersionHistory.plist, and Properties.plist. By deleting those and reverting to those marked as conflicting copy, removing the bracket so that they have their original file name, the full presentation could be recovered. I did this on a backup, so that I do not damage the file further and also to go back to the root of the problem.
