FCPX 10.1 Very slow on iMac and lots of spinning beach balls

I have noticed since I have started to use FCPX 10.1 on my Late 2012 iMac (32GB RAM, 680MX Graphics, i7 quad core, thunderbold Arecca Raid) I am getting lots of spinning beach balls and things are generally slower.

I am really hoping Apple thought about people who cannot affored a Mac Pro, and ensure the performance is also good on iMacs, but unfortunately I am seeing a drop in performance compared to 10.0.9.

Has anyone else with an iMac noticed this?

Maybe feedback is missing in German language version. It's definitely there in the English language version of 10.1.1. Leaving feedback in the App Store might make you feel good, but it does zero to finding a solution to why this is happening to some people and not to others. You might want to take a look at the fcp.co forum in the BruceX thread and see what is typical for FCP performance.

I too have the same problem. 10.9 worked. You would get the sb once in a while but no big deal. Background rendering also worked but not with 10.1. 10.1 is a beta, end of story. The interface and functionality of 10.1 was enhanced but the code driving it was not optomized to handle it in proper fashion, hence, a really slow and buggy system. The same applies to Compressor whereas 4.07 worked with Matrox, while 4.1 does not. This is really amateur time when Apple rushes code out to support the Mac Pro, which has enough horsepower to deal with the unoptimized code of FCPX and Compressor, while the rest of us suffer sloppy programming that Jobs would have prevented due to 1. the flagship status of the Mac Pro where said machine needed apps to show off it's horsepower and 2. to insure that Apple would forever remain the heart and soul of graphic, design and video professionals untill the end of time, something that has taken a hit due to these flawed programs.

Inexecusable without question.

May I suggest donloading "Systym Pal" from the App. store? When i experiment with lots of effects, I can see the memory slowly disappear - so I exit wait and re-open & all is cherry. I have the latest IMac w 1 TB Flash, 16 Gigs Ram using Lacie Big 5 (10 TB) thunderbolt (raid 0). Still, i never run any other programs in the background and even unplug my ethernet cable when editing. Been doing that for years. Facebook fans can go cold turkey.

I have been following on the Mavericks forum about the process "com.apple.iconservices". It appears after some boots and not others, it grows & grows & grows. Point is, if one has other issues then the likely place for them to go critical is in Final Cut 6,7 & X. Always been thata way. Always will. I have FCP 10.1.1 loaded to the gills with old projects, old events and & new ones using 2 external drives & internal, all with native 50Mbps Ex-Cam video in (2) 2 hour timelines. Titlles, effects, transitions, mutiple shares with & w/o Compressor. No beach balls. No problems.

Hi all,

I think I found a fix for FCPX 10.1.x slow launching issue (spinning beach ball on splash screen) !

I just followed the steps explained on this link : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495797?start=30&tstart=0

Since i did that, launch slowliness has disapeared and all is back to normal now !!! :)

I hope that this tip can help some of you ;)

Okay, I'm sorry but I had to login after reading your post just to thank you for the suggestion - I got rid of some crappy old third party plugin and FCP 10.1 literally went from slow and almost unusable, to incredibly snappy and, like you said, flawless. It feels like an entirely new piece of software - you just saved me some serious time and cash. Thanks for the suggestion - I can't believe I hadn't thought of that. I love user forums. (Most of the time 🙂)

When you say crappy old third party plugings are you refering to fcpx or fcp7. I def have some old fcp7 plugins that I never use but for fcpx I have the red giant suite. I use Magic bullet looks for almost all my color grading and all of my projects are using them.

An update for me. I went to Mexico for a shoot came back elated to hear about the 10.1.1 update only to find it did absolutely nothing. I consolidated and removed everything out of my internal drive (even though I had a fusion drive and everything has been screaming fast until 10.1), and put it all on a raid. I closed all libraries and deleted prefrences, started a new library for a brand new project, even in a brand new user, and FCP x starts a little better and responds with ok speed untill a few minutes in then everything is so laggy again. I cant ever hit the play button and just play back my media there is always a slight delay and even spinning beach ball at times. I wouldnt call it unusable as I have had to edit three videos through this mess but it *****!

I just try to explain what I am observing with this unbelieveable slow performance. I still get every 5-10 minutes a window opening that other projects are loading, but why? All events and media I am using in this project do not refer or link to a different project. As I understand it is only possible to have just one project openend in the timeline, but for me it seems that Final Cut is willing to load other projects also during my editing.

The lack of performance is very obvious when working with my current music video which is 140 beats per minutes techno sound. I like pressing M for creating my cutting points to the beats. But since 10.1. is is totally impossible to place the markers when playing audio or video, the system is too slow and does not allow writing markers in the speed of the music. It does not help when playing solo, same issue. So my feeling is the the program cannot handle memory or writing to the disk.
