iMessage Profile photo keeps changing to default avatar

After I switched to Mavericks on my new MacBook Air, I noticed that my iMessage custom profile photo keeps changing back to the default avatar. I thought maybe I had selected an image in Google Drive that was disconnecting on sleep, but I have since moved it to 'documents' to avoid that problem. It seems to happen when the computer sleeps and re-awakens. I have changed it in the iMessage app, as well as Contacts, but it still reverts back to the default avatar. I'm guessing that the computer is trying to give me a hint regarding self image. Can anyone help...with the iMessage issue that is.

I finally figured this out. The image that I was pointing to resided on Google Drive, which disconnected when the computer would sleep. I moved the image to a local folder and voila, no problem any longer. I suspect this might be the case with DropBox or other cloud/IaaS solutions...need to keep the file local or select a local file. I just created a folder called "local images" and put things like this avatar image, desktop background, etc. into it. I should have known this would be a problem. Thanks for the help though guys.

Have you tried going to Messages/Change my Picture?

From Messages Help.

Change your picture or a friend’s picture

You can change the picture, or “buddy icon,” that appears next to your messages in the Messages window and in other people’s buddy lists. People can select a different picture to represent you.

iMessage doesn’t represent people with pictures.
