I was able to get Verizon to unlock my iPhone 4s. Verizon did this for me ober the phone.

They also told me there were steps that were necessary to be able to use another carrier's SIM card:

(1) After putting in the SIM card, connect the iPhone to iTunes and answer the questions saying it was OK to use that card/carrier.

(2) make sure that International CDMA was turned off in Settings (under Cellular, under Roaming). I'm still using Version 7.0.4 of the software because it is working and I've heard there are bugs in the latest release.

Oh, and the Verizon support person was smart enough to remind me to backup the iPhone before connecting with the new SIM card just in case there was a problem.

What carrier's SIM are you using? Is it a domestic SIM (ie. T-Mobile, AT&T) or foreign? If it is domestic then it is good to hear that Verizon has joined the bandwagon of unlocking iPhone 4S's. My sister has one and I will tell her to request a domestic unlock in that case.

For my Sprint issued iPhone 4S, Sprint claim's it is absolutely impossible to have the domestic SIM lock removed and the phone will forever be locked to Sprint domestically. It is total BS as people have successfully removed the domestic lock through alternative means but that is Sprint's policy and it's customers are stuck with it. The same policy applies to all iPhone's currently sold by Sprint including the 5, 5S and 6, so buyer beware. I will NOT be upgrading my iPhone on Sprint. I will switch carriers before I consider getting another phone. My employer, who provides my phone and service, was going to upgrade us to 6's but I was able to convince them to hold off due to the fact the phones would become bricks once service was switched to new devices.

I don't know if it's due to the new legislation, or if it was possible before, but it should work fine.

I currently switched to Cricket from T-mobile, and on their home page there is a link to check your phone's IMEI number to see if it is a compatible device.

I'm planning on doing this with three different Verizon phones, which are almost out of contract, one of which is an iPhone 4s.

I first typed in the number on their website and it came back as compatible.

Then I also stopped by the Cricket Wireless store, and asked them the reliability of this IMEI check (due to all the rumors of not being able to use a Verizon phone elsewhere).

They said the check is actually not completely foolproof, but that it is greater than 95% accurate, and told me the iPhone however, switches over fine.

(I'll know for sure in a couple of weeks)

Verizon, according to their unlock policy, chooses not to unlock devices for domestic use: http://www.verizonwireless.com/aboutus/commitment/safety-security/device-unlocki ng-policy.html

You can check HT201328 in Apple's K-base for more details. An exact quote is that "Only your carrier can unlock your iPhone."

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that the carrier will or must unlock the iPhone.

According to the link you just posted though, the policy statement suggests that Verizon does not lock phones, except of a certain type.

And for that particular type, the unlock code is given in the policy so you may unlock it yourself.

"We do not lock our 3G devices, other than our Global Ready 3G phones, and the simple code to program such 3G devices for use with another carrier is either “000000” or “123456.” If the user guide for your device does not provide instructions to access the programming menu, you can contact us at *611 from your Verizon Wireless phone, or (800)922-0204, for assistance."

Another section also states that, "By the end of January, 2015, we will unlock those SIM cards..." which probably has something to do with the new Legislation.

It looks as if for all other than the "Our 3G Prepaid Phone-in-the-Box phones" section, the article is giving you the keys to the car and saying "You're free to go." (sounds like arms were twisted)
