I recently chose to install the latest updates, which included a firmware update.
Now I am stuck in a situation whereby the firmware update gets about 1/3 through before turning itself off.
I have reset SMC and also tried rebooting with and without the power cord. I can boot into OSX utilities and run disk diagnostics, all is well.
So I'm stuck, what on can I do to fix the firmware installation?

The running of the firmware update pre-positions the firmware updater so that the update takes place at next regular startup. If you intervene, the updater does not run.
The actual update is over really quickly. Check your firmware version number. It may have already completed.
Not sure how to do this; the update gets 1/3 way through, then the laptop switches off.
There appears to be no way to get out of this loop

Again, I am unable to boot into my MacBook Pro Retina, as the firmware update fails half way through and then shuts down.
Restarting the mac reproduces the same issue.
I can boot into the recovery partition, but this offers nothing more than disk utility. If it is possible to find out how to retrieve this info within terminal, I can provide it.
I'm currently looking for which firmware recovery cd I should download, but not sure which one is applicable, there doesn't appear to be a specific cd for the retina.

Not sure if the serial number will also help.
Serial # will not help and do not post it. Try holding down the Option key at startup and select the OS X partition to boot from. If that doesn't work try a Safe boot, hold downn the shift key at startup. If that doesn't work then you'll need to take your Retina into an Apple store Genius Bar.
Thanks for he help, both partition and safe boot end up in the same cycle. This time the update got over half way through before the laptop turned off.
Very frustrating! No genius appointments until after Christmas now
