How do I set up a broadcast email group on my ipad?
Can I put individual contacts into a group for the purpose of emailing a group?

You can't do this on the device, without an app to help you. There are a few group email apps available on the App Store.
Most will only let you send email from inside their own app, but MailShot Pro creates special contacts that you can use from the Mail app, and tens of thousands of compatible apps, building group email right into those apps.
It includes a number of different ways to create your groups, so you can do this as quickly and easily as possible.
